A Medieval copper alloy pedastal-type seal matrix, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1400. The seal has an oval base, although its edges are highly abraded, from the reverse of which expands the faceted hexagonal-sectioned pedastal handle. The handle terminates in a trefoilate knop, with a drilled circuar perforation to form a loop, and with this preceded by a rounded collar. The face of the seal is engraved with a probable depiction of St Catherine, depicting a crowned female figure stood facing, holding an wheel with a equal armed cross in the centre and regularly spaced angled rays com…

A Medieval lead seal matrix, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1300. The matrix is pointed-oval and flat, with an unperforated lug projecting from the reverse. The front of the matrix is engraved with a depiction of a crescent moon partly enclosing a star made from five curving radiating lines. The inscription is set between two plain lines and reads + SIGILL' WI' [...]I'. ROBI'.: with the final three characters of SIGILL cut across by a transverse bar indicating abbreviation. The missing letter, due to damage, is presumably an F, leading to the full inscription reading SIGILL WI' FI' ROB…

A Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, probably dating c. AD 1250-1300. The matrix is pointed-oval in plan and flat in cross section, with a central rib along the longitunidal median line of the reverse and an attachment loop with cast perforation expanding from the apex. Although seemingly original, the attachment loop appears to have been damaged and reattached with an adhesive subsequent to finding, with signs of recent damage aroud the edges of the break. The obverse is engraved with a design of a lamb standing left, right foreleg folded underneath itself, and head right looking at …

A Medieval copper alloy pointed-oval shaped seal matrix, probably dating to c. AD 1250-1300. The matrix features a central star and crescent motif, with the crescent opening upwards, and with a retrograde inscription around its edge. This is obscured by abrasion, but appears to read +D[E]VM TIM(I/T)E. The reverse is plain, with an incomplete perforated suspension lug projecting from behind its top edge. Dimensions: length 22.9mm; width 15.9mm; thickness 5.00mm; weight 3.43g. TIMETE DEVM, "Fear God", is a relatively common inscription on seals of this period, cf. GLO-EC08B0 and B…
