Part of a glazed Medieval tile, probably a floor tile, dating from c. 1300 - 1500. The tile is sqaure in shape though the edges are not entirely straight, which could be the result of damage. Both surfaces are glazed, though one is more heavily glazed than the other, and is a distinctive light brown colour. The surface of the glazed face is not even, and is pitted and rough in places. There is evidence of abrasions on the surface, one of which looks very much like a '2'. The fabric of the tile is a solid orange in colour and has some small quartz inclusions. Because the tile was fo…

Fragment of a glazed Medieval tile, probably a floor tile, dating from c. 1300 - 1500. The fragment is a small portion of what was likely a square shaped tile. The fabric is a bright orange and relatively fine with very small mica inclusions. The core is reduced and dark grey in colour. Interestingly, both surfaces are glazed, though only one surface is decorated with patterning. The pattern itself is not known but it is made from a raised ceramic design which may have been decorated with a coloured slip. The background is glazed. Fragment of a Medieval coarse ware vessel in what appears to be the form of an animal foot or paw. The ceramic fabric is coarse with inclusions of large quartz and shell granules. The outer surafce is oxidised and a bright orange in colour, whilst the inner fabric or core is reduced and grey in colour. It is unknown what type of vessel this fragment belonged to, but it likely formed part of the base. The zoomorphic feature of the fragment is suggested by the shape of the item. There are two deep grooves dividing the 'toes' with the remains of one other. The foot also comes to a poi…

The outside part rises to surround the stone with concave sides and there is incised decoration around the slightly flared rim. The reverse is plain and saucer-shaped. A silver finger ring with an empty bezel. The ring is undecorated and the band is D-shaped in cross-section. The bezel extends straight up from one side of the ring and would have been oval in shape but has been squashed. The setting is quite deep (c. 8mm) and retains no traces of what was set in it. The interior of the band may bear traces of an inscription but it is very faint and could be coincidental discoloration of the metal. Dimensions: Diameter 20.1mm, band width 3.2mm, band thickness 1.3mm, bezel height 8.4mm, length 17.3mm, width 9.1mm, weight 5.6g Discussion: The style of …

Cast copper-alloy shield shaped stud of medieval date, c. 1250 -1400. The artefact is shield-shaped and flat on the back. A blunted stud projects from the undecorated back. The surface is decorated with enamel, and is heraldic in design. There is a thick band of red enamel running diagonally across the shield face. Much of the enamel is worn and most is missing. Within it appears to be a diagonal line of three fleur-de-lys. The decoration outside of the band on the face of the shield is very worn. It is probable that studs such as these were used alongside other heraldic har…

Cast copper-alloy shield shaped harness pendant. The surface of the pendant is decorated in moulded relief and the pattern is a diagonal cross-hatch across the entire surface, with a diagonal band running from the upper left to the lower right edge (when viewed head-on). There is also evidence of gilding present on the surface. The back is plain and undecorated. There is an attachment stem that rises from the centre of the top edge, and would likely originally have featured a drilled hole, perpendicular to the plane of the pendant face. This hole would have facilitated hanging. …

Three fragments of an engraved silver finger ring. The band is flat and has a plain interior. The exterior is engraved with two different designs; two sets of circles surrounded by dots flank a grid-style hatched design. The smaller fragments show the same hatched design, making an overall design of matching opposite sides when reconstructed. The circles are chased and may have held a different material – possibly enamel. There is a small equal armed cross on the medium fragment. The smallest fragment shows the hatched motif followed by a chased heart which is bisected by the ban…

Medieval inscribed gilded silver finger ring, Medieval in date (c. AD1250-1400). It appears to be in the style of a ‘buckle ring’, since there is a rectangular bezel engraved with a cross-hatched pattern with a plain section of hoop next to it, somewhat resembling a buckle or clasped hands. The rest of the flat-section hoop is engraved with an inscription in untidy Lombardic script, reading )) IHC NAZAREN (((.
