Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy anthropomorphic mount or strap fitting dating to the period c. AD 1300 - 1450. The mount is in the form of a crowned head, the crown bifoliate, with engraved fleurs on the crown and engraved eyes and mouth. The eyes are triangular with a dot in the middle. Incomplete medieval to post medieval copper alloy buckle frame dating to the period c. AD 1350 - 1650. The buckle consists of a central narrowed pin bar with a D-shaped loop projecting from one side. Medieval to post medieval fragment of a handle from a vessel, probably a cauldron, dating to the period c. AD 1100 - 1850. At one end, the object is triangular in section and comprises a small part of the vessel wall from which the handle projects. The handle tapers along its length and becomes oval in section, terminating in a worn break. According to Butler, Green and Payne (2009), "From about AD 1100, cast copper alloy vessels...were commonly used for downhearth cooking, with the vessel sitting among the embers or suspended over the fire. All but the poorest medieval or post-med…

Medieval to post medieval copper alloy double loop buckle. The buckle has a narrowed central strap bar which exhibits traces of iron corrosion, probably from the missing pin. An oval loop expands from either side of the strap bar, each one thickening towards the outside edge. The inside edge of each loop exhibits a filed V-shaped pin rest. The inside edge of each loop exhibits eight filed grooves, four on either side of the pin rest, giving the outer edge a cusped appearance. The buckle has been distorted out of shape. A similar example is discussed in Whitehead, R, 2003, p. 60, no. 354.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object of medieval to post medieval date (c. AD 1350 - 1700). The object is in the form of a thimble, with a domed crown and expanded mouth, however, it lacks any indentations, hles or pits, usually seen on thimbles. The thimble may be unfinished, or may be part of another object such as a ferrule or end cap from a cane or similar. Wrinkles and folds in the sides may suggest that it was made using the stamping and hammering method (Holmes, 1999, p.1). A similar example, recorded on the database as a thimble is: SWYOR-F51B11.
