Medieval copper alloy key dating to the period c. AD 1100 - 1350. Roughly cut from a sheet of copper alloy. Oval bow with an off-centre oval aperture which has a break on one side. The shank tapers along its length, terminating in a projecting pin and a simple rectangular bit set at right-angles to the shank. See: Read, B, 2017, p. 72, no. 543.

Medieval copper alloy key dating to the period c. AD 1100 - 1400. The bow is lozengiform with a flat knop at the apex engraved on both faces with two transverse grooves and two flat side knops. The junction between the bow and shank has a flat, expanded collar. The shank tapers to a projecting pin and has a simple trapezoidal bit projecting from one side. Keys of similar form have been recorded from excavated contexts dating to the 12th - 14th century in Winchester (Biddle 1990: 1024-1036).

Medieval copper alloy key of Ward-Perkins' (1940) Type II dating to the period c. AD 1050 - 1300. Formed from a single piece of sheet metal, the bow is oval, with an off-centre aperture and exhibits traces of filing. The shank is rolled, with a roughly longitudinal seam. The crude bit projects from one side and has two chisel-cut wards. See: Ward-Perkins, J.B, 1940, p. 136 & pl. XXX, nos. 21 - 23.

There is a moulded collar engraved with cross-hatched lines, now worn in places. The hollow shank is cylindrical and terminates in a worn break. Projecting from one side are two narrowed channels, each expanding into a bit with four wards. See: Ward-Perkins, J.B, 1940, P. 140 - 141.

Incomplete medieval copper alloy key dating to the period c. c. AD 1300 - 1450. The bow is in the form of an openwork quatrefoil with a moulded circumferential collar at the junction between bow and shank. The shank is cylindrical and hollow, the interior now filled with earth and corrosion product. The channel expands into an incomplete bit, the surviving section comprising four wards arranged in two opposing pairs. It terminates in an old break. Ward Perkins (1940) considered a hollow shank to be indicative of a casket or chest key (Egan 1998, p.111).

It exhibits a deep cleft, dividing the bit into two opposed parts, each with two horizontal channels and one vertical channel running along the outer edge.

The bit is complex, consisting of three wards, one sigle and one double, both of which exhibit a channel running parallel to the shank. All three wards are closed loops. The junction between the bow and stem exhibits a slightly ridged collar. The stem is square in cross-section, hollow and now filled with soil. The toothed bit projects from one side of the the stem on the end of a square-sectioned channel. It exhibits three wards. Similar examples are discussed by Read, B, 2017, p. 66 & 72.

There is a hole 22.2mm long in the side of the shank, likely caused by post-depositional damage. The bit is on the same plane as the bow and projects from the end of the shank at a right angle. File marks cover much of the object.

The topmost exhibits an engraved transverse line; the side knops are foliate. The stem projects from the fourth corner, with a slight collar visible at the junction. It then tapers to a worn break. Medieval copper alloy casket key dating to the period c. AD 1100 - 1400. It has an oval bow. The shank is oval in cross-section and has a raised collar at the junction with the bow. The bit of the key consists of two simple rectangular projections on one side of the shank. On the opposite side of the shank are a series of four transverse grooves. The narrowed pin projects from the end of the shank and terminates in a worn break. Similar examples recorded on the PAS database include: BUC-127B51 & PUBLIC-03953F.
