Lead alloy, circular, plano-convex decorated cast spindle whorl. The off-centre circular perforation is slightly damaged at the apex but it is largely parallel-sided through to the base. The upper surface of this whorl have been crudely decorated with linear scratches or knife cuts forming an angular random geometric design. Spindle whorls are very much utility devices providing a simple spinning-inertia function when manually turning fibres into yarn. Their use spans the Iron Age, Roman, Early-Medieval, Medieval and early Post-Medieval periods, but in metal they are more typically Ea…

Fragment of a cast copper-alloy spur rowel in the form of a pointed star (probably 5 points originally) dating to either the Medieval or Post Medieval period. Only two of the star-arms remain both of which have a flattened oval cross-section. There is central circular approximately 4mm diameter perforation through the body of the rowel through which the axle attaching it to the spur would have been located. On both sides there are radial grooves at the basal intersection of each of the star arms. The artefact has a brown-green rough surface. Such rowels are difficult to date and a wid…

Complete cast copper-alloy spur rowel in the form of a seven-pointed star dating to either the Medieval or Post Medieval period. The arms are a flattened oval in cross-section. There is central circular 4mm diameter perforation through the body of the rowel through which the axle attaching it to the spur would have been located. On both sides there are radial grooves at the basal intersection of each of the star arms. The artefact has a brown-green rough surface. Such rowels are difficult to date and a wide medieval to post-medieval date is suggested; similar examples can be found ill…

Copper alloy Medieval to Post Medieval possible prick spur neck and goad. The long sub-circular cross-sectioned neck is broken at the thicker end, at a point where the diameter reduces abruptly to a smaller concentric fracture. From the greater diameter here it tapers linearly down to a raised collar from which it expands into a quatrefoil-shaped conical goad with a flat top and central projecting blunt knob. Only the goad and neck survives, the rest of the spur is missing from the aforementioned end break. No exact parallels could be found but similar long-necked prick spurs with sha…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy decorated gilt Medieval to Post Medieval Unidentified Object. The fragment is formed from a thin sheet strip the sides of which are undamaged but both ends are broken. It was probably part of a decorative strap fitting such as a composite strapend, buckle plate or mount, but insufficient remains for it to be reliably identified as such. The main surviving feature is low relief geometric decoration on the surface with vestiges of gilding. The design consists of nested triangles forming arrowhead-shaped motifs with trefid ends. Circa AD.1300-1650.

Corroded copper alloy single piece Medieval buckle plate. The plate consists of a single strip folded transversely 180 degrees around the strap bar remnant of an iron buckle; a central rectangular slot is removed from the bent end of the plate to accommodate the now missing pin. Adjacent to the pin slot on either side of the front plate are single circular iron corrosion encrusted rivet holes, the reverse side of the folded plate extends far enough to be pierced by these rivets but then finishes short of the front plate in a triangular shaped terminal. The end of the longer front plat…

Copper alloy Anglo-Scandinavian or Anglo-Norman stirrup mount of Williams' Class A type 11. The mount is triangular in plan with circular holes in each of the corners. The mount has a raised outer border, within which is a left facing rampant beast, similar to a lion or dog with its head thrown back in a howl and its right foreleg raised. The reverse of the mount is plain with no basal flange to speak of but the entire piece curves ourwards from the apex to the base. These stirrup mounts date to the 11th century AD of the Early Medieval to Norman period. Incomplete copper alloy Medieval dagger scabbard chape. The chape consists of a single strip of 2mm thick metal folded back widthways on itself by 180 degrees. Both faces are a sub-trapezoidal shape with the narrower end (15.2mm wide) at the fold and the opposite wider end (21mm wide) having a trifid shape. All side, and one of the centre prongs from the trifid ends, are reduced to stubs by old breaks. Both outside surfaces are badly degraded by corrosion but there appears to be vestiges of a chevron pattern with bordered sides (similar to (OXON-613667). No surviving rivet holes are v…

Copper alloy, possible small Medieval harness mount. The object consists of a thin sub-square body with an incomplete loop uppermost. The loop is set to one side of the long vertical axis and has worn through at an angle suggesting the strain that caused the wear was offset from the vertical. Heavily worn and corroded it has been stripped back to bare metal with the exception of a small amount of degraded red to green coloured enamel on the front face (located at about 5 o'clock) that encompasses part of a circular-bordered but irresolvable design. The reverse has encrustation on the …

Lead alloy, circular (29mm diameter) undecorated spindle whorl. The cross-section is sub-rectangular with a near parallel sided central 12mm circular perforation. Silver long cross late Medieval irregular coin. The coin has the appearance of being heavily clipped but the vestiges of the legend and the style, do not fit with known coins of the period. For example the eyes are overly large and circular and the obverse legend appears to begin with a "W". Very similar looking coins with related characteristics and metrics were found in the Queenhithe hoard of counterfeit coins, discovered in Feb 1980 on the Thames foreshore. See Archibald, M. M The Queenhithe hoard of late 15th century forgeries; (1980) published in BNJ 50.8. These hoard coins we…

Crude Medieval lead alloy pot mend. Two sub oval offset discs one very slightly concave on its outside surface, the other with a raised boss; both encapsulate a sherd of ceramic pot within. The ceramic fragment is Medieval with a dark grey reduced colour to the body, and a shell temper. There are also strands of a light brown sturdy fibre of consistent thickness penetrating between the lead mend and the ceramic. There is no sign of weave to this and it may simply be intrusive roots; however, the find has been cleaned and out of the ground for many months without the strands decaying, …

Crude lead alloy conical weight. Round in cross section tapering to a blunt rounded apex. There is no evidence of loops or a hole for suspension and it is therefore probably a traders standing weight. Lead has been used to provide mass and weight for centuries and without archaeological context or any stylistic evidence only a very broad date range can be given. Weight is 205g or 7.23 ounces. Circa AD43-1750.
