Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probable Medieval lead alloy token or perhaps weight. Discoidal with radiused upper corner to the cross-section. There is a short flat area to the outside circle with a likely break. This may have been the location of a linking strip to say a bag seal, or perhaps the waste sprue removal on a multiple casting tree. One side of the object has a very crude facing crowned head cast in relief, which despite the lack of legend is reminiscent of coinage and early jettons from the medieval period. There is some other imagery on the flan such as two parallel lines to the right of the head (as…

Copper alloy fragment of a Medieval to Post Medieval unidentified object. The metal is a grey-green colour, heavy for its size and as such is probably a leaded bronze, from which many medieval to post medieval vessels are cast. Viewed from the side it has a flange-like flat top (or base) that is vaulted on its underside similar to the everted rim of a vessel, vessel foot or candle holder fragment. The inside is the original smooth hollowed surface and is radiused against the flat flanged surface (estimated diameter of hole 29mm). Too little survives for mo…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete copper alloy Medieval single piece buckle plate. The plate has been made from a rectangular sheet folded back transversely on itself through 180 degrees. The folded end has a central rectangular slot and two corners at the fold removed to accommodate the pin and missing buckle frame. The pin slot is now encrusted with iron corrosion from remnants of the same. The front plate is shorter than the rear but may have broken along a raised line of transverse decoration; there is transverse wriggle work creating a straight-line chevron pattern running across the width. The part o…

Fragment of copper alloy Medieval buckle frame with decorated integral composite plate. Only a stump of one side of the buckle loop remains which curves around to join integrally with the rectangular shaped plate. On the plate adjacent to the missing frame is a circular hole with a short remnant of a closed wrap-around pin still in situ. On the reverse the integral plate has a thickened border creating a flat central recess to the plate with a small circular rivet inset at each corner. The recess was probably designed to accommodated the strap with a backplate to form a narrow box cha…

A double rectangular loop cast copper alloy buckle dating from the late Medieval to Post-Medieval period. In plan the frame is rectangular with bevelled outer edges with one loop having a central recessed pin rest. The pin is missing, but witness corrosion marks on the central strap bar and the pin rest indicate it was iron. The frame shows significant remains of a whitemetal coating, probably tinning. Whitehead (2003) states that this design of buckle was widely used in this period and was produced in various sizes. The majority date from the late sixteenth and seventeenth century. T…

Lead alloy, circular (30mm diameter) spindle whorl. Bi-conical with slightly concave sloping faces. The periphery is squared with remnants of radial line decoration cast in relief on one of the sloping sides. Central 11mm circular perforation tapering to 10mm at the non decorated side. Spindle whorls are very much utility devices providing a simple spinning-inertia function when manually turning fibres into yarn. Their use spans the Iron Age, Roman, Early-Medieval, Medieval and early Post-Medieval periods. The hand spindle on which they were used continued in use at least until the 16…

Object type: WEIGHT

Large lead weight of probable Medieval date. The weight is sub-square with a sub-rectangular cross-section. On the obverse face, crudely cast in heavy relief is an equal-armed plain cross. The reverse is undecorated. Lead weights were cast locally from the Roman period onwards, and without context can be difficult to date precisely; although most tend to be attributed to the late medieval-post medieval period. Crosses are common motifs on weights and feature on large, small, square, circular, and shield-shaped examples of the period, perhaps through religious reference the cros…

Copper alloy mount, cast as a U-shaped blunt hook. The tapering circular cross-section hook springs at right angles from a wider flat topped 5mm thick head. The sub-triangular-shaped head (in plan) has a double lip to the sides, as if it originally attached or expanded into the body of a thin-walled vessel, such as a dish, bowl or similar. A similar shaped hook can be seen at SWYOR-F7C241 albeit the method of attachment appears to differ. Probably date is medieval, circa AD1000-1500.
