Crude Medieval lead alloy pot mend. Two sub oval offset discs one very slightly concave on its outside surface, the other with a raised boss; both encapsulate a sherd of ceramic pot within. The ceramic fragment is Medieval with a dark grey reduced colour to the body, and a shell temper. There are also strands of a light brown sturdy fibre of consistent thickness penetrating between the lead mend and the ceramic. There is no sign of weave to this and it may simply be intrusive roots; however, the find has been cleaned and out of the ground for many months without the strands decaying, …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Crude lead alloy conical weight. Round in cross section tapering to a blunt rounded apex. There is no evidence of loops or a hole for suspension and it is therefore probably a traders standing weight. Lead has been used to provide mass and weight for centuries and without archaeological context or any stylistic evidence only a very broad date range can be given. Weight is 205g or 7.23 ounces. Circa AD43-1750.

Lead alloy, circular, plano-convex undecorated cast spindle whorl. The circular perforation narrows somewhat towards the top, either by design or wear, from 7mm diameter uppermost to 8.8mm at the base. Spindle whorls are very much utility devices providing a simple spinning-inertia function when manually turning fibres into yarn. Their use spans the Iron Age, Roman, Early-Medieval, Medieval and early Post-Medieval periods, but in metal are more typically Early Medieval to Post Medieval. The hand spindle on which they were used continued in use at least until the 16th century in Norfol…

Gilded copper alloy spoon-shaped Medieval harness pendant, complete with attached pendent hanger. The pendant body is in the shape of a small spoon with the convex forward face decorated with seven engraved lines in a scalloped pattern. The oval suspension loop is set perpendicular to the plane of the harness pendant body and is suspended from a transverse spindle running between the backward folded arms of the hanger. The body shape of the pendent hanger mirrors that of the harness pendant with the same engraved scallop decoration scheme. There is a single integral prong on the rever…

Copper alloy Medieval strap-end. Fashioned from two thin 23mm long by 12.5mm wide tongue-shaped sheets held together by a single circular medial rivet at the attachment end. The terminal end has a narrow medial nib on both sheets, the inwardly curving nature of which suggests they may have originally been integrally linked and folded back around the end of the strap at this point. There is no evidence of a forked spacer or further rivets to secure the strap. Circa AD14th century.

Fragment of copper alloy Medieval folding clasp. Rectangular cross-section upright frame, bent in a squared U-shape. The free ends are semi-oval and are joined by a circular spindle. The spindle end of the frame is slightly wider than the other giving an overall trapezoidal shape. A foldable plate matching the internal shape of the frame is wrapped around the spindle and stretches approximately halfway across the internal length of the frame, with a small stumpy medial prong at its end. Copper alloy probable buckle pin. Lenticular shaped pin with a semi-oval end tapering to a long triangular point. Approximately one third of the way from the oval end a pair of symmetrical haunched arms project, one to either side of the pin body. The arms initially rise away from the pointed end then turn down 90 degrees towards it. The down-turned section has a trifid-shaped outside edge. As a buckle pin the lack of a frame attachment loop is conspicuous; however there is a short flat section at the tip of the oval end from which a loop may have detached, albeit this appears to be s…

Heavily corroded iron rotary key of Medieval to Post Medieval date. The finer detail of the key is somewhat obscured by extensive corrosion and active spalling of the surface, but it remains complete. The bow is an open D-shape with a slightly angled outside loop. The solid shank tapers out perpendicularly from the centre edge of the bow's straight loop. The rectangular bit is positioned flush with the end of the shank and in the same plane as the bow. It has two extant wards on the front edge although a third may have been lost to corrosion; with a further three let into the bottom e…

Copper alloy fragment of a probable end-folded one-piece Medieval buckle plate. Sub-rectangular, one half has been lost at the point of folding around the bar of the missing buckle. One tab that flanks the pin slot is also missing from an old break. The attachment end retains a single medial rivet. There is an adherent but powdery black substance covering both sides of the piece, perhaps soot from burning or the remains of a pitch-like substance. A more complete example can be seen at LIN-483FC5 on the PAS database. Circa AD1150-1450

Incomplete and distorted gilded copper alloy Medieval folded buckle plate. The thin plate was originally sub-rectangular and would have folded back on itself at one end around the strap bar of the buckle. It has broken at the point of the bend across the central pin-slot and the back half is now missing. The strap-bar end of the surviving plate has been forcibly bent forwards over the front decorated face of the plate. Originally there would have been four circular rivet holes for attachment, one in each corner; two of these survive complete, one on either side of t…

Copper alloy late Medieval to Post Medieval stud or tack. The head of the stud is flat and sub-square, delineated by a pellet border. From corner to corner is a saltire cross with a single pellet in each quadrant.  A single square section pointed stud projects from the centre of the reverse. Read, B. illustrates similar single stud fittings on p31-p33 of Metal artefacts of antiquity: A catalogue of small finds from specific areas of the United Kingdom,(2001). Copper alloy hooked strap fitting of Medieval to Post Medieval date. The fitting consists of a narrow rectangular plano-convex body with two robust and integral rivets on the reverse. The body extends to a substantial rearward facing hook that tapers to a semi-circular blunt point. The robust construction of the fitting is perhaps more suggestive of a harness application. Circa AD1300-1600.

The outer loops are slightly concave on their undersides with both loops bent upwards on either side of the strap bar, probably through damage. The upper surface of both outer loops have incuse wedge shaped grooves that reserve an inner border to both loops. There is evidence of a black coating (lacquer) on the surface of the whole buckle, particularly where it has been retained in the decorative grooves. Similar to Whitehead, R.
