Early Medieval or Medieval whetstone or hone. The stone is sub rectangular with slightly concave long edges so it widens slightly towards each end. One end is complete with rounded corners, the other ends in an old break. In section it has straight sides and slighty convex faces. It thickens slightly towards the complete end before thinning to a rounded edge. Just before the break is a circular perforation for suspension. the hole is hour glass shaped having been drilled from both sides and is 3.8mm in diameter in the centre. The stone is fine grained, grey to slightly grey green in c…

Cast lead wieght; square with a flat base and a cast design of a grid with a central pellet on the slightly concave top surface. It is 19.8mm by 19.6mm by 9.4mm and wieghs 29.08 grams, 1.033 ounces. As the weight so nearly approximates to an ounce it probably dates to after the widespread adoption of the averdepois system in the 14th century. Similar square weights with simple cast designs on the top face are illustrated in Biggs and Withers (2000:27-9) although none with the same design as this example, they are also though to be mostly Medieval - Post medieval in date.

Cast lead alloy globular weight with corroded iron suspension loop embedded at the top. The weight is sub-spheircal with a flattened base and flattened part at the top. The loop is made of a short piece of iron wire with each end embedded in the top of the weight with an transverse indent in the top of the weight, below the wire, creating an oval hole. It is 42.9mm in diameter, 32.8mm thick, excluding the loop, 36.4mm including and weighs 352 grams, 12 and a quarter ounces. The suspension loop suggests it may have acted as a steelyard weight. Plain lead weights are usually locally …

Cast lead alloy disc shaped weight with corroded iron suspension loop embedded at the top. The weight is circular with a flat base and top. Both top and base have a wide, irregular, thickened border around the edge. The loop appears to be made of a short piece of iron wire with each end embedded in the top of the weight and a further piece of corroded iron extending to one side, possibly part of a larger loop running through the first. It is 65.3mm in diameter, 18.2mm thick and weighs 433 grams, 15 and a quarter ounces, nearly a pound. The suspension loop suggests it may have acted…

Sub-circular lead alloy 'pan' weight of probably Medieval to early post-medieval date, c. 1390-1700 The weight has a slightly concave back and flat sides with a slightly irregular, in width and thickness, raised rim around the front. The front is stamped with three very large fleur de lis, almost filling the field. The weight is 53.3mm by 49.9mm and 7.9mm thick. It weighs 108g, 3.8 ounces. The weight was probably originally 4 ounces, a quarter of a pound in the Avoirdupois system, adoped after c. AD 1390 (Biggs 1992, 44). The marks are likely to be local verification marks. Such m…

A cast lead truncated steelyard weight that is circular in plan and conical in profile and slightly asymmetrical. There is a perforation from the base to the apex for the hooked rod that would then attach to the steelyard arm. The hole is off centre. The weight weighs 190 g which equates to about 6.7 avoirdupois ounces or almost half of an avoirdupois pound, as one avoirdupois pound was 15 ounces. One Roman pound or libra was 328.9 g so this weight would equate to more than a half of a Roman pound, but half an English troy pound equates to g, and the shape and weight sugge…

Medieval cast lead shield shaped weight. The weight has a raised central section on the front within a thinner border. On the central section is a worn lion rampant while around the border is a row of indented dots. A larger dot at the centre of the top may have been intended as the start of a suspension hole, which is incomplete. The back is plain. It is 34.6mm long, 25.2mm wide and 11.6mm thick, it weighs 54.34 grams, 1.913 ounces. Biggs and Withers illustrate a number of similar shield-shaped lead weights with rampant lion design (2000: 37-41, nos. 88-99). Like most shield-shaped…

Medieval or Post Medieval lead trade weight of one pound. The 'pan' weight is octagonal with eight facets around the sides and a flat top and base. The weight is 52mm across, 21.5mm thick and weighs 445g, 15.69 ounces, just under 1 pound. The averdupois system of pounds and ounces was developed in the late 13th-14th century.
