Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two fragments of medieval harness mount, possibly joining with extremely worn breaks or (more likely) part of a three-loop mount. Together, the mounts are 62mm in length. The metal is copper alloy and there are traces of gilding on both. The style of the surviving terminal is similar to some harness pendant suspension mounts, cf. Griffiths 1986, Finds Research Group Datasheet 5, no.21d. It has a pointed but rounded D-sectioned projection from a circular loop 2.4mm in diameter with two little ribbed mouldings joining it to the arm, which narrows and widens before another transverse rib…

Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy probable harness mount, square in shape with a pierced projection. This has probably been broken in antiquity as has the opposite face of the mount, although this is not certain as the metal has been stripped and removed traces. The mount measures 12.8x20.6x1.7mm and weighs 1.75g. The piercing is 3mm in diameter. It depicts a dog walking right and facing forwards within a circle, within a square. In each corner is a lis. A hook, another similar projection or arms for a harness pendant may have originally extended from the mount. 13th/ 14th century.

Small fragment from the angle at the top of a medieval ridge tile with the remains of a low knife-cut crest. This crest has been stabbed twice from one side. There is a sparse wash of green glaze. This tile comes from the kilns at Minety. For a description of very similar tiles see Wiltshire Archaeology Magazine 68 (1973) 79-88 with particular reference to fig.2 nos 24 and 25. The height of the crest, only 25mm, suggests that this piece is most probably 14th or 15th century. Measures 68x78x11.2mm and weighs 96.33g.

Not quite spherical, although each half could be described as hemispherical, unidentified lead object, with a diameter of 16.2mm around the casting seam, and a thickness of 13.2mm. It weighs 17.50g. The lead has a dark shiny patination and along the casting seam, exactly opposite each other, is a lattice impression, the larger of the two of which is 6x6mm. It seems unlikely this is textile as the holes in the lattice are too deep. Probably late medieval to post medieval in date. Possibly shot, but its non-spherical shape would impede its flight through the air.
