Medieval lead pointed oval personal seal matrix with a slightly sqaushed loop on the reverse. It measures 32.5x22x4.6mm and weighs 12.28g. The matrix depicts a central eight-pointed star around which is the inscription S'ROBER LA STEPOLLE, perhaps S(igillum) Rober(t) La Stepolle. Possibly Robert (at) the Steeple. If a local man, this could be a reference to the village of Steeple Langford. Or possibly this is referring to a man who built steeples. On the reverse the line below the loop is prominent. 13th/ 14th century.

Medieval lead pointed-oval seal matrix bearing a woman's name. The central motif is a cross above and below a central diagonal cross, with additional V shapes filling the side angles. The diagonal cross, or saltire, may represent St Andrew's cross. The inscription is set between grooved borders, and reads +S' MATIL' DE. MOLENDIN. (Seal of Matilda Miller, or Seal of Matilda of the mill). Molendinum is the Latin for mill. The central motif is an eagle displayed; the inscription reads + CRAS DACOR NON OIC. 14th century. Malcolm Jones has commented that this inscription is presumably the same as that found on brooch SUR-690FCC, which reads CRAS DABO NON HODIE. This appears to be a humorous inscription, and the record SUR-690FCC gives several parallels from England, France, Italy, Austria and Denmark. It can be translated as "Tomorrow I will giv…
