T-shaped strap-union with three separate loops for attaching straps. The centre of the T is a raised square with ?niello-inlaid decoration of a double-strand saltire. The arms of the T are square loops, each decorated with oblique grooves on their side faces. In each of the square loops is a small strap-loop; the front part of each one is expanded into a triangular terminal which contains a separate copper-alloy rivet. One rivet survives intact and shows that the strap it held was 2 mm thick. The whole thing is small – the T measures 16 x 13 mm. What exactly it was used for is …

Cruciform pendant. 25 mm wide by 34 mm long, each arm is D-shaped in section and has decoration of transverse grooves. Three of the arms have concave ends and are fairly short, but the upper arm is longer and ends in a loop which is at right angles to the plane of the pendant. There is a circular perforation in the centre. The front is gilded, and the whole thing is rather worn. This pendant might have been intended as jewellery for a human or for horse-harness; it is rather large and crude for a person, but possibly rather small for a horse!

Rectangular strap-end. It appears to be made from one chunky piece of metal which has a deep cleft running down two-thirds of the length. The top plate is much thicker than the under-plate, and is decorated with nicks along the edge which also cut into the edge of the under-plate. Down each long edge is then a row of stamps, probably ring-and-dot but now very worn, and then a double groove. These are cut off before the closed end by two transverse grooves, and the closed end has then got a transverse moulding running across it. The attachment end has two AE rivets with large circu…

Hook-piece from an interesting book clasp. Most of these date to the sixteenth century, or possibly later, but this is unusual in that it has certainly earlier decoration. The attachment end is strongly flared and is cut into two incurves separated by a ‘grooved aperture’. This is characteristic of 14th-century composite buckles and strap-ends and must be indicative of a similar date. To either side of the grooved aperture is a ring-and-dot motif, both with two rings and with an AE rivet passing through the centre. Above the attachment end, the clasp then flares very slightly …

One loop from a swivel. The loop is D-shaped and sub-triangular in section with a rounded inner face; the outer face has traces of short grooves arranged in a herringbone pattern. Each end of the loop has an animal head terminal with two large lozengiform mouldings which have traces of two transverse grooves dividing them into an ear and an eye. The triangular-section snouts are decorated with longitudinal lines, and between the two snouts is a ring which would have held the bar from the other loop. A very well-made example.
