Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Lead pilgrim's ampulla, flat and now rather damaged. The lower part is rounded, and the upper part is flaring; one of the 'handles' is missing and the upper part is cracked and stressed. There is decoration on both faces, but on the lower halves only. One face has a large crown with cross-hatching below; the other has a quatrefoil, with a central rib and leaf-like veins on each foil. It would originally have held holy water from a shrine, but the specific shrine cannot now be identified. Medieval, probably 14th century.
This ampulla is noted by Anderson (2010, 187, table 1…

Copper-alloy annular brooch, circular and 35 mm in diameter. The frame is rectangular in cross-section, 6.5 mm wide and 2 mm thick, with a very narrow (2 mm wide) pin constriction. The pin is missing. The upper surface of the brooch is engraved with a well-made border groove around each edge. In between is an inscription in small black-letter; the letters which are rather poorly made and spaced, and occasionally cut the inner border groove. The first three, next to the pin constriction, read ihc and are quite well cut; there is then a quatrefoil in a lozenge. After this the quality fal…

Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Lead-alloy pilgrim's badge depicting St Andrew, now bent in half. An upright rectangular plaque, it has a surviving projection at one lower corner that would originally have extended to a stitching loop; the other three corners are broken. St Andrew is in the centre of the plaque, wearing a striped or pleated gown drawn in at the waist; his limbs are splayed as if attached to an X-shaped cross. He faces the observer, but his face is very crude indeed with two large round eyes, a round nose and two large straight lips filling the whole of the space.
The arms emerge from the gown to…

Decorated swivel, thought to be part of an elaborate dog's lead or similar. Made from copper alloy, it has an openwork flattened-sphere centre (23 x 32 mm) and a separate swivelling pierced element at either flattened end which would originally have held a suspension ring.
The central 'sphere' is made up of four openwork circles, each enclosing a four-leafed plant. One of the leaves is always very small, and they all end in scrolly curls. Each one has an engraved midrib. Obliquely set across the base of the plant are two further grooves, with ribbing at right angles below.…

Decorative circular plaque made from gilded silver. 12.5 mm in diameter, it is decorated with a raised border around a sunken field in which is a counter-relief dragon in profile facing left . The dragon has two sturdy hind legs with a zig-zag edge resembling fur or feathers, and a medium-sized tail. The body is decorated with rows of punchmarks which may represent fur, feathers or scales. The wings are large and appear deeply feathered. The long neck curves up and backwards and ends in a head which points downwards, with open jaws and a large expressive eye. Detached rowel from a spur, now incomplete. There were originally six points radiating from a central perforated roundel; four survive complete, each in the shape of a fleur-de-lis in some cases joined to its neighbour. Each face is decorated with grooves between the lobes of the fleurs-de-lis, and short curved engraved lines on the stalks. There is some iron corrosion around the perforation from the swivel bar. Detached rowels are very hard to date precisely; the fleur-de-lis design suggests some time in the medieval period.

Gilded finger-ring, probably made from silver. 22 mm in external diameter, the hoop is roughly triangular in section with a slightly convex inner surface and a facetted outer surface. It is 4 mm wide and 1.5 mm thick. The bezel has been fractured neatly across its centre; it consists of a roughly oval, but now broken, flattened platform decorated with engraved decoration so fine that it can hardly be deciphered without the aid of a microscope. Even with this help the original decorative scheme is uncertain; there is a reserved area in the centre with a trefoil to one side and what look…

Medieval gold finger-ring set with a garnet. The hoop is of very slender proportions - 0.7 x 0.6 mm - but, remarkably, intact and still nearly circular (c. 18-19 mm diameter). The hoop runs right up, without any shoulders, to a conical setting flaring out to accommodate a slightly irregular oval garnet (5.7 x 5.3 mm measured across the claws). This is cut flat across with very narrowly bevelled edges, and is held in place by four simple triangular claws. 12th to 14th century.

Large but incomplete shield-shaped plaque. 51 mm wide, and probably originally about 62 mm long, it is slightly and unevenly convex. It is decorated with a relief lion rampant which has the remains of a thick shiny white-metal coating. Across the lion runs a narrow diagonal line, from the upper edge near the left-hand corner down to just above the break. This line has the remains of red enamel. The line cuts across the lion's head, making it hard to see its details, but there is a spot of red enamel at the back of the head, perhaps between open jaws, which may show that it was reguard…

Shield-shaped harness mount. The top is straight and the sides are outcurved; on the reverse is a large integral rivet with burred-over end. The front is covered with a chequered pattern of alternating gilded and blue enamelled squares. In heraldic terms this is 'chequy or and azure', and these are the arms of the de Warenne family. The most likely candidate for the bearer of these arms is either John de Warenne, 7th earl of Surrey (1231-1304) or his grandson and heir John de Warenne, 8th earl of Surrey (1286-1347). The principal seats of the de Warenne family were at Lewes in Sussex …

Large quatrefoil copper-alloy mount, with small right-angled point in each angle. On the reverse is a substantial integral tapering spike. The front has enamelled and gilded decoration; in the centre is a relatively small shield with the charge Azure, a lion rampant. The lion would have had to be either silvered or gilded (according to heraldic convention) but there is no trace of either, the metal here being corroded. Around the shield is a narrow reserved border of metal, then three dragons on a red enamel background. There is one dragon to either side and one above, and two retain …

Copper-alloy horse-harness pendant, a flat quatrefoil just over 1 mm thick and now a little bent. In the centre is a sunken circle with a raised shield; within the shield are three raised chevrons. Between the chevrons and in the circle outside the shield are the remains of enamel, consisting of a red coloration. Although this is almost certainly a copper-alloy corrosion caused by the presence of the enamel, and not the actual colour of the enamel itself, the three-chevron design is probably the arms of Clare which were red. In technical heraldic terms these arms are gules three chevr…

Copper-alloy drop handle and handle lug from a chafing dish. The drop handle is a T-shaped frame, not perfectly symmetrical as one of the angles between the stem and the cross-piece is markedly curved. It is fairly corroded, but seems to be basically hexagonal in cross-section with some lumps and casting flaws. If it hadn't been still attached to its handle lug it would have very much resembled one of the T-shaped horse-harness buckles used to link straps of different sizes. The cross-piece is 58 mm wide, the stem 29 mm wide. The handle lug is the conventional thick rounded shape, in …
