A medieval copper-alloy single-looped buckle frame of broadly rectangular shape. The sides have a thin rectangular cross-section. The outer edge is expanded, circular in cross-section with facets. A pin rest occupies the centre of this outer edge, formed of a central transverse groove, flanked by two narrow grooves; these occur on both upper surface and reverse. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete cast copper-alloy annular brooch of medieval date. The frame is formed of a thick wire of circular cross-section which, contra the definiton of medieval brooches, has no current pin constriction. However, it has been broken as a result of old damage, possibly at a former constriction; the ends have been neatened and overlap each other by c. 4mm. The object otherwise has the module and delicacy of a brooch; it now has an internal diameter of c. 19.0mm. A pin of circular cross-section survives on the frame, its tip overhanging the edge of the frame, though with very shallow c…

A distorted and incomplete medieval copper-alloy buckle frame having lost its pin bar as a result of old damage. The frame is D-shaped in plan, and broadly rectangular in cross-section with rounded corners, but is angled. At both ends of the frame are animal heads that grip the stump of the broken narrowed pin-bar that is oval in cross-section. The animal heads are delineated by transverse, slightly obliquely set collars moulded in low relief. The heads are shown more at three quarters view to account for the fact that the back of the frame would not generally be seen. They are decora…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable button formed from a pair of fused medieval late Tournai copper-alloy jettons of Crown type, AE MARIA GRACIA PL legend, c. AD 1415-1497, cf. Mitchiner 663ff.
The pair of jettons are fused together with some sort of material between them. The edges have been curved down giving a dished shape with convex front and concave reverse. The centre is almost flat but the edge curves down 45 degrees with clear evidence of deliberate shaping in the bevelled rim of the upper jetton. The lower rim is less bevelled as the curve is more upright at this point but it continues the curve …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A broken and incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy pedestal type seal matrix with a circular face. The handle has been almost entirely truncated, and the upper third of the die has been lost, both to old breaks. The central pedestal type handle appears to have been circular in section from the scar, a triangular indent on the scar is possible a casting flaw. The matrix has a central design of a rampant lion on a triangular shield with straight sides. There is some reddish material in the lion but this is almost certainly iron deposit rather than enamel as enamel would prevent the seal…

An incomplete medieval cast copper-alloy single looped buckle, missing both pin bar and pin. The frame is oval with a thickened outer edge, angled on its lower surface, with a possible central pin rest. The pin bar has been lost with the exception of the beginnings of collars; it is assumed that the pin bar would have been off set and narrowed. As noted, the outer edge is expanded both in width and thickness. The frame has a corroded to a red/brown colour and appears plain.
