A lower fragment from a cast copper-alloy medieval to post-medieval chafing dish drop handle. In plan, the handle frame would have been sub-trapezoidal with rounded corners, the frame is rectangular in cross-section. What survives is the lower part, other than one corner which is missing, with a pronouncedly incurved centre. The frame has a dark-green/grey colour; the breaks are old and patinated. A parallel can be found in illustrated in Allen (1984; fig. 192; ref. 165); it also conforms to Lewis's Type B1 (Lewis 1973, 61-64) given a 15th-/16th-century date.

A copper-alloy strap-fitting of medieval or post-medieval date. The artefact consists of two roughly parallel sub-rectangular plates of equal form, separated from each other by a central gap and joined by a basal loop. The now-missing strap would have fitted between the plates, where it would have been held in place by two rivets, both missing. The plates expand gradually and slightly towards the attachment end which is incurved. There are some small losses at this end. One pair of rivet holes is at this end, the other above the loop. The basal loop, which has a convex upper surface, …

A cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, probably from a medieval annular buckle. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. The oval loop is broken such that around just over half of it survives. There is a rectangular ridge at the junction of the loop and the shaft. This is decorated with four transverse incisions, creating five ridges. The pin tapers slightly to a rounded tip. The object now a dark-brown colour with much corrosion and pitting. The loop has been bent to one side, the tip slighly to the other. The size of …

Treasure case 2013 T675: Disclaimed and returned to finder Description: A medieval silver pin with faceted biconical head and hexagonal sectioned shaft. The head is faceted on six sides, echoing the shaft with which it appears seamless. The shaft has been truncated following old damage and bent round through 90 degrees. Dimensions: The pin is now 16.7mm long, with head 6.8mm in diameter. It weighs 1.44 grams. Discussion: A similar copper-alloy pin with biconical faceted head is illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 300; no. 1476), though this is pentagonal rather than hex…

A cast copper-alloy folding strap clasp of 15th century date. It consists of a rectangular loop, the extended outside edge of which is moulded to resemble the upper part of a beast's head. The back of the outside edge is bevelled to echo the moulding on the front. At the other end, the pin bar is narrowed and recessed for a missing plate. The animal head includes a shallow rounded protrusion at the front which suggests a snout. A transverse zone before this, and one at the top of the head adjacent to the loop, is filled with small circular punch marks. The sloping zone between feature…

A lead mould of medieval date for a halfpenny possibly of Edward III, in two parts. The parts are formed of broadly flat rectangular bars with squared off ends and slightly bowed sides. The sides are generally perpendicular to the main faces and the outer surfaces are not embellished; they are, however, scratched, with linear depressions in places. Two pairs of lines on the sides, both off centre, one slightly closer to the 'coin end', indicate the alignment of the parts when put together. Although the thickness of the parts varies in places they fit together well. As implied, the…
