Silver short cross penny of uncertain ruler 1180-1247. The coin has been poorly struck with the best preserved face being the obverse. The reverse is a mirror negative image of the obverse and none of the lower die impression survives. This has been caused by the moneyer making a mistake during striking. The moneyer has not removed the previous struck coin from the die, which has stuck to the lower part of the die, and then been over-struck by this coin. This has resulted in a good obverse impression and the details of the other coin being impresssed in the negative on the reverse. …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Ceramic crucible of probable later Medieval or early post medieval date (1200-1600 AD). The crucible is incomplete and been abraded by flowing water creating smooth rounded edges to the profile. In plan the crucible is irregular; originally it would have been broadly circular, now it is an irregular ellipse. In profile it is an irregular sub-rectangular shape with a relatively narrow base which expands to an open mouth. The water worn damage present has affected one edge more than the other and so diameter of the base and mouth cannot be truly estimated. The fabric is extremely hard wi…

German Denar (Pfennig) of Cologne, struck under Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden (1238-61) as 'Elekt' (1238-9); mint Soerst normally spelt Soest, (in Westphalia, east of Dortmund). A similar example can be seen in the Coins section of an exhibition catalogue 'Die Zeit der Staufer'(Wüttembergisches Landesmuseum, 1977), p.111, no. 175.21 ( referenced as H. 653) and pl. 93, 7 and 8-9. Body sherd from a pottery vessel, not enough survives to indicate the form, probably dating from the later medieval or early post medieval period (1350-1550). The sherd is irregular in plan and profile. The fabric is a relatively soft fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, grog (pottery temper) and quartz inclusions. The fabric is also highly micaeous. The fabric colour is a uniform mid buff orange with the outer surface having a reduced grey colour. Glaze has been applied over this grey coloured external face. Slightly laminated and burnt body sherd from a pottery vessel, not enough survives to indicate the form, probably dating from the later medieval or early post medieval period (1350-1550). Cast copper alloy pedestal / pendant seal matrix of medieval date (1250-1400). The die is roughly circular in plan with a diameter of 17.3mm. The reverse rises to a height of 27.1mm terminating in a trefoil shaped perforated loop. The body of the matrix is a pedestal formed from six tapering sides. This terminates in a series of molded bands and the loop. Cast copper alloy rotary key of probable medieval date (1150-1400). The key is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a similar shaped cross section. The end of the shank of the key is hollow, suggesting that it was cast in a three part mould. The handle loop of the key is oval in shape; the upper edge of this has visible wear through use. The loop of the key has also been damaged by movement in the plough soil and a vertical crease in the metal is clearly visible. The loop extends into the shank of the key which is rectangular in plan. From the lower edge of one end a relatively crudely…
