Body sherd fragment of an unglazed earthenware pottery probably from a vessel dating from the medieval period (1200 - 1350). Not enough of the sherd survives to be certain of the form or size, without this a more specific date is difficult. The sherd is most likely to be from a thin walled unglazed fine-ware jug or similar delicate tableware vessel. There is no evidence of heating and sooting on the exterior face of the sherd suggesting these this was not involved in cooking food. The sherd is abraded and the fabric is a relatively soft earthenware with a number of small grit inclusio…

One ceramic body sherd of Medieval date. The fabric is a hard, reduced brown at the core with a mid-orange on the exterior on both outer faces. Temper includes frequent, very fine sand. The exterior does not appear to have decoration or any glaze. Due to the small fragment size it would be too difficult to determine the size of the original vessel. The sherd measures Length: 31.87 mm, Width: 20.5 mm, Thickness: 5.77 mm and Weighs: 4.7 grams.

Nine fragments of medieval pottery, these are all body sherds. Two sherds have the remains of a green glaze on one face. One sherd has the remains of a pale brown coloured glaze. One sherd has evidence of sooting therefore is possibly a cooking vessel as opposed to the others that are possibly tableware. The fragments have a buff colour on the outside edge and a grey core of varying thicknesses, the fragments have frequent fine grit inclusions. It is likely that these sherds represent a number of different vessels. The collective weight is 37.8 grams.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast lead or lead alloy pilgrims ampulla dating from the medieval period; late 13th - late 15th century (1250-1500). The fragment is sub-oval in plan and rounded sub-oval in cross section. The lower section has a rounded convex base and the opposing upper edge is irregular. On one face of the ampulla there are the remains of a shield with a rounded lower edge. There does not appear to be a design on the opposing surface. The ampulla is a light cream colour. It is probable that the ampulla was broken due to modern plough damage. Spencer (1990) suggests that ampullae …

A Medieval or Post Medieval (12th to mid-19th centuries) cooking vessel leg. In plan the leg is a sub-rectangular with an asymmetrical rounded foot and a broken upper edge. This break is not recent. The leg is rectangular in section with rounded edges and one face is decorated with a slight central vertical ridge. The surface has a mottled mid green to dark brown patina. It is uncertain what type of vessel this leg comes from, but Egan (1998) comments that commonly used cooking vessels in the Medieval period include skillets, ewers, and cauldrons. According to Butler, Green and Payne …
