Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire East

A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl. In plan it is sub-circular and in profile is bi-convex. There is a central sub-circular perforation which is 6.8mm diameter. Both faces of the spindle whorl appear undecorated, however any original decoration may have been lost due to corrosion in the plough soil. The surface of the spindle whorl is cream in colour. It is difficult to date lead spindle whorls without supporting archaeological context. The whorl measures 27.1mm diameter, is 9.5mm thick and weighs 27.0 grams.
