Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast copper alloy Medieval-Post Medieval buckle frame. Weight : 2.26g. As it is only a fragment of a buckle it is difficult to specify the type of frame but it is probably a rectangular flat frame. It is comprised of part of the side of the frame and an extended outer edge. The incomplete side of the frame is 11.7mm in length and 4.6mm wide. It has a worn break. A centrally placed grooved line runs along the length of the upper surface, resulting in a kidney-shaped cross section. On the outer corner opposite the break there is a cusp where the side of the frame me…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval to Post-Medieval lead seal matrix. This artefact weighs 12.41g and is sub-circular in shape with diameters of 22.1mm (and 20.8mm on the assumed width axis). The face of the matrix is flat and appears to be undecorated. It may be that this was a blank matrix which was never completed with a design and legend. Alternatively it is possible that a design and or legend may once have been present and has become so extremely worn, through use, intentional damage or post-depositionally, that it is now completely illegible. Viewed in profile the matrix body is wedge shaped. The…

A Medieval to Post-Medieval copper-alloy heraldic badge in the shape of a shield. The shield has a double concave top edge that results in three pointed cusps, one at each of the top corners and one at the centre of the top (chief) edge. The shield has a maximum length of 21.5mm, measured with a flexible dress-maker's tape measure, but has been bent forward on a diagonal line. This bend has reduced the once flat shield to a length of 19.2mm. The top of the artefact has a maximum width of 16.8mm. The sides taper downwards to a pointed central base. An incomplete Medieval to Post Medieval cast copper alloy cauldron foot. The artefact is comprised of a straight section of the leg, terminating in a protruding rounded foot. The artefact is broken at an angle, which appears to have been caused by the remains of an air bubble in what should have been a solid casting. This gives a variation in height. The longer side is 34mm and the shorter is 27mm. The air bubble occupies the majority of the cross-section of the leg. The straight section has a flat front and reverse. It has a trapezoidal cross-section which gives a variation in width.…

A silver-gilt finger-ring of late Medieval date c. AD1400-1500. This artefact appears to be complete, although has been squashed out of shape, and weighs 1.00g. At the base of the loop the band has an oval to sub-rectangular cross-section with a width of 1.4mm and thickness of 1.1mm. The base of the loop has been squashed into a relatively flat line. The fragment has a thickness of 2.1mm at one edge and 1.1mm at the opposite edge. The thicker edge is relatively smooth and straight with concave curves at either end. An incomplete copper-alloy Medieval buckle plate. This incomplete plate weighs 3.52g, is sub-rectangular in shape with a length of 21.3mm and width of 19.5mm. Although the plate appears to have straight sides at first glance, closer inspection reveals that the edges are actually slightly concavely curved. The sheet metal has a thickness of 1.2mm. Protruding from one of the width edges are the integral remains of two broken and very worn tabs. These indicate that the plate originally had a bifid notch consisting a central pin slot with sub-angular cut-away corners to either side. The w…

A copper-alloy Medieval finger-ring, complete with the exception of a missing setting from the bezel. This finger-ring weighs 2.26g. The ring has a sub-circular loop, possibly the result of having been slightly squashed out of shape. The interior dimensions of the loop are: height 20.5mm and width 19.3mm. The band has a width of 2.9mm and thickness of 1.4mm at the base. Further around the loop the band has a narrower width of 2.7mm. A copper-alloy Medieval flat-topped shield shaped mount. This mount weighs 1.93g, has a height of 12.8mm, width of 11.2mm and thickness of 2.3mm. The front of the shield shows no obvious decoration. However, this surface feels lumpy to the touch which may be the worn remains of moulded decoration. Indeed a diagonal shallow recess of c.2.8mm width crosses the shield. This may originally have been filled with enamel to match a true heraldic design or to suggest at such a motif. The reverse surface of the shield is flat and undecorated.
