A copper-alloy finger-ring of Medieval date. The original shape of the hoop is uncertain as the finger-ring is squashed out of shape, though circular might be expected. In the squashed form the finger-ring hoop resembles and kidney shape and measures 27.0mm x 16.1mm.
It weighs 1.70g. The band has a width of 3.7mm but the transverse solder line has a width of 4.5mm. The solder line accounts for 0.7mm of the total circumference of the hoop. The most plausible explanation is that the surface of the copper-alloy band has corroded or worn away at a faster rate than the solder material…

A fragment of silver finger-ring of Medieval date.
The fragment weighs 0.47g and has a sub-rectangular shape with parallel sides and slightly diagonal transverse breaks at either end. These breaks appear to be quite fresh as they are not abraded. It has a sub-rectangular cross-section with flattened upper and lower surfaces (originally the external and internal surfaces of the loop) and convexly rounded sides. The width is 5.2mm along the full length of the surviving part and the thickness ranges between 1.1mm and 1.7mm. The fragment has an incomplete length of 8.8mm. On what wou…

A silver-gilt finger-ring of late Medieval date c. AD1400-1500. This artefact appears to be complete, although has been squashed out of shape, and weighs 1.00g. In the finger-ring's current condition it has an oval to sub-semicircular shaped hoop with maximum width of 18.1mm and height of 12.9mm.
At the base of the loop the band has an oval to sub-rectangular cross-section with a width of 1.4mm and thickness of 1.1mm. The base of the loop has been squashed into a relatively flat line. As the band curves upwards, to resume the original curved line of the hoop, the band becomes inc…

A copper-alloy Medieval finger-ring, complete with the exception of a missing setting from the bezel. This finger-ring weighs 2.26g. The ring has a sub-circular loop, possibly the result of having been slightly squashed out of shape. The interior dimensions of the loop are: height 20.5mm and width 19.3mm. The band has a width of 2.9mm and thickness of 1.4mm at the base. Further around the loop the band has a narrower width of 2.7mm. It is not clear whether this narrowing is by design, the result of wear or damage, although it is less likely to be by design. The band gradually widens a…

An incomplete copper-alloy artefact of high/late Medieval date. This artefact might have been a finger-ring or possibly a type of mount in the form of a loop. The incomplete item weighs 10.98g and has a decorative circular plate of 28.7mm diameter, and thickness of 1.2mm. The plate is curved and has two tapering projection on opposite sides of the plate that end in worn rounded points. It is probable, but uncertain, that these points are the remains of worn breaks that might have continued to form two integral spikes or rivets or joined together to form a complete loop. It is not poss…
