2 pieces of very highly vitrified clay. They are both broken on 3 edges and join together to form one piece. The clay is a dark reddish brown. One piece is triangular whilst the other is sub-rectangular. The clay has quite a lot of inclusions in, pieces of stone (quartz) about 2mm in size. The high level of vitrification suggests they were used in a high temperature industrial activity such as metalworking or glass working. The fact that it is vitrified and vesicular on both sides suggests it was used inside a furnace as some sort of support, rather than being part of the furnace wa…

Iron Age fastener; Cast copper alloy toggle fastener dating to the late Iron Age or possibly the early Roman period. The fastener is formed of a small, hollow cylinder of copper alloy with flat, circular terminals. The cylinder narrows just before the terminals and has an incised line around its centre. A thin band of the metal has been pulled out at the back of the cylinder to form an attachment loop, leaving an oval hole behind the loop. Many similar examples are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. Compare, for instance, ESS-CC8296, HESH-786D48 and BH-94DC85 L…

Copper alloy penannular brooch length 48mm, width 53mm, thickness 5mm, weight 8.05g. Round section frame, the ends have been flattened and turn back on them selves twice to give a scroll effect terminal. The pin is made from copper alloy with the terminal bent round into a loop. The overall condition is poor, because corrosion has affected much of the artefact leaving a heavily pitted surface with bright green powdery patches. This type of brooch corresponds with Fowler type C and dates to the 1st century BC to 1st century AD

A copper alloy penannular brooch dating from the Iron Age or Roman period. The brooch is no longer circular, having become bent into a chevron shape. It is 36.8mm long, 25.7mm wide and 2.8mm thick. It is circular in section. The terminals are flattened spherical knops with a collar. It is probably Fowler’s type A3 (“The Origins and Development of the Penannular Brooch in Europe” in The Prehistoric Society, 1960). Almost all the pin is missing, with just the attachment end surviving wrapped around the brooch. The brooch has a smooth light green patina.
