Late Iron Age to Roman (AD 25-100) copper-alloy Nauheim-derivative brooch. The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring and has a surviving length of 51.52mm and a weight of 4.7g. The spring has broken before the first coil, but it is likely that the spring would have coiled twice either side of the head and would have had an internal chord. The bow has a maximum width at the head of 4.40mm with straight sides, which converge towards the pointed foot. The bow is of D-shaped section with a maximum thickness of 3.46 near the head. The upper bow is decorated with a series of oblique incis…

Object type: BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Published
A copper-alloy button-and-loop fastener of Wild's Class VI dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period. There has been little study of this diverse category of artefact (several examples of which are recorded on the PAS database) which appears to develop from the cylindrical toggles of the late Iron Age (see, for example, R. Jackson; 1990; pp. 40). The head is rectangular in plan and, at the centre, has a recessed circular cell with outer ring. The cell probably once contained an enamel setting, but no trace of this remains. On the reverse, extending from the centre point of the…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Iron Age chariot fitting; Chariot lynch pin with cast copper alloy loop terminal and remains of iron pin bar. Also found in association with a long, copper alloy dowel which seems to fit through the lynch pin. Dated to the early 1st century AD
The main piece of the lynch pin has a broad, iron shaft which is quite corroded but which seems to be roughly circular in cross section. This shaft ends at a broad, domed, copper alloy terminal which has a narrow circular hole passing right through it. The terminal ends in a loop, running parallel to the hole mentioned above. The loop is formed …

Iron Age harness fitting; Fragment of cast copper alloy terret ring inlaid with red enamel, dating to the early 1st century AD. The fragment includes one of the ‘collars’ of the terret ring (the terminals which would have enclosed the narrower bar for attaching the terret to the yoke of the chariot) and the lower section of one side of the ring itself. The ring has a flattened, subrectangular cross section which is fairly narrow at the broken end of the fragment (near the apex of the complete terret ring) but flares broadly to the trumpet collar. The surface at the trumpet end of t…

Iron Age fastener; Cast copper alloy toggle fastener dating to the late Iron Age or possibly the early Roman period. The fastener is formed of a small, hollow cylinder of copper alloy with flat, circular terminals. The cylinder narrows just before the terminals and has an incised line around its centre. A thin band of the metal has been pulled out at the back of the cylinder to form an attachment loop, leaving an oval hole behind the loop.

Copper alloy penannular brooch length 48mm, width 53mm, thickness 5mm, weight 8.05g. Round section frame, the ends have been flattened and turn back on them selves twice to give a scroll effect terminal. The pin is made from copper alloy with the terminal bent round into a loop. The overall condition is poor, because corrosion has affected much of the artefact leaving a heavily pitted surface with bright green powdery patches.
This type of brooch corresponds with Fowler type C and dates to the 1st century BC to 1st century AD

A copper alloy penannular brooch dating from the Iron Age or Roman period. The brooch is no longer circular, having become bent into a chevron shape. It is 36.8mm long, 25.7mm wide and 2.8mm thick. It is circular in section. The terminals are flattened spherical knops with a collar. It is probably Fowler’s type A3 (“The Origins and Development of the Penannular Brooch in Europe” in The Prehistoric Society, 1960). Almost all the pin is missing, with just the attachment end surviving wrapped around the brooch. The brooch has a smooth light green patina.
