A very worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period, c. 25-65 AD. A one-piece example with an intact rearward facing hook at the top of the head (L.: 13.1mm). This hook would have held the external chord of the spring; this latter, along with the pin, broken just below the head such that a curved vestige remains, is now missing. Below the hook there are two flat wings of which only vestiges now remain. The bow is oval in cross-section. It tapers from a maximum diameter of c. 5.4mm to less than 1.5mm at the catchplate end. The…

A corroded and incomplete copper-alloy La Tène I Iron Age brooch (3rd-4th century BC). The brooch is sub-oval in plan and semicircular in cross-section, with a flat reverse surface. At the head one spring coil remains, to the left when viewing the brooch with head uppermost. The bow arcs round to a leg in the same plane as the head; the foot and catchplate have been lost along with the rest of the pin mechanism. The brooch is a mid-green colour with variable survival of surface patina. A comparable example can be found illustrated in Hattatt (2001, 288; ref. 725).

This hook would have held the external chord of the spring; this latter, along with the pin, broken just below the head, is now missing. Below the hook there are two flat wings which survive bent and abraded (W. across wings: 17.2mm). The bow is sub-oval in cross-section. A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period, c. 25-65 AD. An one-piece example, the head has suffered considerable damage with the wings, rearward hook and spring surviving only in very small parts. The brooch decreases from a thickness of 11.45mm at the head to 4mm at the bow. At the catchplate end the brooch tapers to a sharp point. The catchplate itself is highly abraded. The artefact has corroded to a red-brown colour.

A small flint end scraper, almost square in shape at the distal end, before widening into a semi-circular proximal scraping and cutting surface. On the dorsal face this effect is somewhat marred by the presence of a relatively large amount of the cortex remaining at the proximal end. The flint is an irregular biface, with the ventral face very flat and smooth, despite a curve in the flint which is not really visible but may be felt. The flint itself is a grey colour, with areas of both lighter and darker grey shades, while the cortex is brown with an almost white surface showing throug…

A rim sherd probably originating from a jar type container of Iron Age date. The fabric is very coarse, with large inclusions of a flint temper, but the inner face of the sherd appears to have been burnished as it feels and looks shined. The outer face is severely abraded and the inner face has also suffered. Where the abrasion has occurred, one can see past the black outer oxidised finish to the light brown core. The curvature of the sherd suggests that the vessel would have had an original diameter of c. 100mm.

A pair of interlocking cast copper-alloy loops probably of late Iron Age or Roman date. Both circular loops have flattened, moulded collars above stems of thick oval cross-section tapering to a circular section stub. It seems as if the stems would have been inserted into other parts, although it is unclear as to what those parts would have been or how they would have functioned. The pitting and overall mid-green patina on the objects suggests the date offered. The loops appear to be of identical form with one (42.9mm) shorter than the other (47.6mm) presumably due to old damage. …

An incomplete and slightly corroded copper-alloy La Tène I Iron Age brooch (3rd-4th century BC). The brooch is broken at its head with the pin and half of the spring mechanism lost (H.: 18.3mm). However, in the extant pair of coils to one side is the remnant of the axis bar. From the head (Th.: 2.7mm) the bow curves through ninety degrees, expanding as it does so. Indeed, the profile of the bow is relatively angular compared with the more gradual arc of some. The bow reaches a maximum thickness of 6.15mm. It tapers into the foot which curves back on itself terminating in a circle…
