Late Iron Age to Roman copper-alloy end-looped cosmetic mortar. The mortar is boat-shaped, 55mm in length and 6mm in width into which the cosmetics were placed and then ground. At one end is an integral circular loop. This cosmetic mortar is late Iron Age or Roman in date (1-200 AD). Such objects are unique to Roman Britain, only one has been found outside Britain, in Northern France. They are believed to have been used to grind small quantities of powder or cosmetics and have an association with fertility, due to their crescent shape and some examples with male and female animal he…

Copper alloy penannular brooch of Fowler type C and dated to the 1st century BC – 1st century AD. The brooch is formed of a band of copper-alloy, of oval cross section, which has been bent round into a broad, open oval shape. The band does not meet and the terminals at either end of the band are formed by flattening the metal and rolling it up on itself. The pin is still present and is formed of a single flat piece of copper alloy, curled around the band of the brooch at one end and shaped to a rough point at the other end, where it rests on the opposite side of the brooch. Incomplete copper alloy miniature shield. The shield is flat, hexagonal with curved sides in plan, and has a raised circular boss in the centre. There is no surface decoration or any sign of a grip on the reverse of the boss. The shield is in a fair state of preservation. Approximately one quarter of the shield is missing and there are cracks thoughout the surface of the remaining metal. The upper portion of the shield has been bent in two places, and although the bent areas are well patinated it is not clear due to the thinness of the metal whether this represents intentional mut…

Incomplete copper alloy miniature shield. The shield is flat, oval in plan, and has a raised circular boss in the centre. The shield is decorated with a perimeter of raised pellets that may either be imitating studs or the heads of rivets that attached full-sized bronze shields to a wooden backing. Incomplete copper alloy miniature shield. The shield is flat, hexagonal in plan with oval sides, and decorated around the perimeter with raised 'torc-like' motifs. Each torc is a raised crescent with a raised pellet terminal. Approximately half of the shield is missing. The missing part is longitudinal. Incomplete copper alloy miniature shield. The shield is flat, diamond shaped in plan with oval tips, and undecorated. The shield is in a good state of preservation. Part of the perimeter is damaged at the lower right hand side, and the lower right hand quarter of the shield is bent slightly forwards. Incomplete copper alloy miniature shield. The shield is flat and decorated although now in a very poor state of preservation. Both tips are missing and one damaged end is bent over onto the reverse. It is not clear whether this shield was once oval or square. The surface of the shield is pitted and worn however a small raised circular boss is still visible in the centre. There are perhaps four rivet holes around the perimeter, although since the perimeter is so abraded and damaged it is diff…

Incomplete copper alloy miniature shield. The shield is flat, hexagonal in plan and decorated. The boss is depicted by a raised band enclosing a dome in the centre. This same decoration is also repeated twice above and three times below. The tips of the shield are missing and it is likely that there was once another motif above thus making three on either side. There is a concave rib running around the perimeter of the shield that may have either enabled binding to have been attached to it as noted in some full-sized shields, or perhaps the rib represents the binding. Incomplete copper alloy miniature shield. The shield is flat, hexagonal in plan with curved sides, and has a raised oval boss in the centre.
