Large, complete platform-decorated terret (rein ring). The terret comprises an inset rectangular-sectioned attachment bar, which is flanked on either side with vertical collars. A copper alloy and iron prehistoric base metal hoard consisting of a vase-headed linch pin head and foot terminal, with a copper alloy mini terret found about 30m away. The iron linch pin shaft only survives as stubs projecting from each terminal. The mini terret is likely to have been used with the linch pin (see below) and the the hoard probably dates from 400 BC - 200 BC.

Description: This treasure case is of an Iron Age hoard that was originally deposited in the ground within an upright urn sealed by a quern stone (6). A hoard of Iron Age fittings from a chariot or other horse-drawn vehicle, comprising a pair of linch pins, bridle bits and rein terrets for a pair of horses as well as a copper alloy ingot and a small copper alloy decorative mount. Circa 1st century BC – 1st century AD.

The find comprises of 42 Iron Age gold coins, all inscribed staters of Cunobelin of the Eastern British (North Thames) coin producing region (traditionally associated with the tribes referred to as the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes). All can be dated to the period AD 8-41 and are inscribed with the name of the ruler Cunobelin and the mint of Camulodunum (modern Colchester).

This hoard comprises a copper alloy bowl, the fittings from a copper alloy bucket, and part of a clay pot. Buckets such as this one are usually found in high-status cremation graves from the mid-first century BC, alongside other pots, jugs and pans. These were drinking sets, used for serving mead, wine or beer at feasts. Perhaps the deceased hosted such feasts in life, or maybe this was a way for the living to share the funeral feast with them.
