A contemporary copy of an Early Uninscribed gold Stater of late Iron Age date. No exact parallel could be found for this coin. The reverse design suggests that it is an amalgam of elements copied from genuine Staters of southern England, in particular the 'L' to 'QC' types (see R. Hobbs; 1996; pp. 60-73). The coin has a copper-alloy core and a gilt surface. The flan is oval in plan and plano-convex. It measures 18.5mm in diameter, 1.7mm thick and weighs 2.89g.

1st Century Fibula Brooch: Late Iron Age/ Early Roman Colchester one-piece brooch. The brooch has narrow (15.9mm) wings, and a long (51.2mm), gently curving bow with a slightly bulbous foot. The head of the bow bears the remnant of a 5.7mm diameter stud. The head and foot bear simple line ornament, but the bow itself is unornamented. Interestingly, the curve of the bow has a slight return at the foor, which is more typical of continental examples than Romano-British Colchester type brooches. The brooch has a rough surface and a patchy green-brown patina. Mass 8.2g.

A fragment of a possible Iron Age penannular brooch. The fragment is a ‘C’ shaped section of the brooch which includes the terminal. The terminal is flattened and is an elongated oval in section, and is expanded in width. The edges of the are abraded and therefore probably don’t represent the original edge. The frame leaves the terminal becoming narrow and oval in section and decreases in width and depth until it reaches a broken terminal. This break did not occur too recently. The pin is missing. The surface of the brooch has a thick dark green patina with pitting. It measures …

Copper alloy beaded bracelet fragment of late Iron Age to Early Roman date, c. 1st century AD The bracelet is represented by two globular beads and has a surviving length of 25.0mm and weighs 7.2g. The beads have a thickness and width of 9.0mm. The bracelet thins to 5.2mm between the beads. The surface of the bracelet is eroded but some surviving decoration is evident, comprising ribs near the ends of the beads. The curvature of the bracelet fragment may suggest a bracelet of c. 50mm diameter. The bracelet has poor surface preservation with pale-green surface colour.

The brooch is a cast copper alloy La Tene I brooch. The brooch is cast as one piece. The spring is coiled with two coils with the terminal of the spring pointing upwards and is broken. The break is possibly quite recent as the patina does not cover the break. This would have originally developed to form the pin. The other terminal of the spring develops into the bow. The bow is a ‘C’ shape in profile and is oval in section which increases slightly towards the apex and tapers towards the lower portion of the bow. The lower portion of the bow also forms the catch by curling forwards …

An incomplete, copper-alloy Late Iron Age to Roman Colchester brooch dating to c.25-60AD. The short wings are flat and the bow is circular in section and tapers to a point at the foot. The catchplate has three rectangular perforations. Only one turn brooch of the spring survives, but when complete it is likely to have had six or eight turns. The pin is missing, but the forward-facing hook which would have held the spring's external chord is intact. A similar example can be seen in Hattatt's Visual Catalogue (2000; 297, fig.156, no.1455). Also in Crummy's Colchester report (1995; 11-…

Incomplete copper alloy miniature shield. The shield is flat, hexagonal with curved sides in plan, and has a raised circular boss in the centre. There is no surface decoration or any sign of a grip on the reverse of the boss. The shield is in a fair state of preservation. Approximately one quarter of the shield is missing and there are cracks thoughout the surface of the remaining metal. The upper portion of the shield has been bent in two places, and although the bent areas are well patinated it is not clear due to the thinness of the metal whether this represents intentional mut…

Incomplete copper alloy miniature shield. The shield is flat, hexagonal in plan, and has a large decorative boss in the centre. Miniature shields are difficult to date however they are thought to range from circa 400BC to the mid-late 1st century AD.

Incomplete copper alloy miniature shield. The shield is flat, oval in plan, and has a raised circular boss in the centre. The shield is decorated with a perimeter of raised pellets that may either be imitating studs or the heads of rivets that attached full-sized bronze shields to a wooden backing.
