A copper alloy La Tene type Iron Age brooch. Only one loop of the bilaterial spring remains from which the brooch rises abruptly to form the bow. This then turns in a curve at 90 degrees along the line of the brooch to form the upper bow which then turns down again before curving at 90 degrees to form a tapering foot from which the wedge-shaped catchplate rises with a turned over lip at its upper extremity to retain the pin. Viewed side-on, the bow of the brooch therefore forms a wide inverted 'U' shape. In the centre of the upper bow the brooch is formed into a 3mm thick flat circul…

Unidentified object, which could possibly be either a burned or miscast button-and-loop fastener dating to the late Iron Age. It is a small cast cu-alloy bar with triangular loop at one end and warped/burned terminal at the other end which can no longer be identified. However, the triangular terminal is reminiscent of an Iron Age button-and-loop fastener.

A copper alloy bow brooch which is probably a Simple Gaulish variant of the Colchester type. It probably dates from the Late Iron Age or Early Roman period. The brooch has a simple narrow bow which is a pointed oval shape in section. It is 72.4mm long, 13.3mm wide and 3.4mm thick. At the foot end the bow tapers to a point and forms a spiral loop. There is a slight flange on the reverse of the foot end of the bow which probably indicates where the catchplate would have been, but none of it survives. The head of the brooch flares into very small and narrow wings which are little more tha…

Roman cosmetic implement; Cast copper alloy ‘mortar’ from a cosmetic grinder set. Small, narrow, shallow dish to hold cosmetic powder for grinding with a complementary ‘pestle’. The dish narrows at one end to a short handle for holding between two fingers. The handle flares at the end, in the vertical plane, and has a two-pronged terminal. This, together with the shape of the dish, gives the artefact a fish-like shape, with the dish as the body of the fish and the handle as its tail. The handle also curves off slightly from the line of the dish. The metal is quite pitted and co…
