A complete copper-alloy late Iron Age to Roman openwork mount or strap fitting. The object is discoidal in shape. There are four inwards pointing sub-triangular holes arranged at regular intervals behind the outer edge, each with concave sides and a convex outer edge. The inner edges of these create four petal-like solid shapes between them, the inner end of each joining a solid circle in the centre of the object. The outer face of this circle is recessed and decorated with two raised annulets each with a deep depression in its centre. The outer face of each petal is dec…

The object is hollow and moulded into the form of a human head and neck. This has long hair with incised vertical lines giving the impression of strands. A projecting nose and chin and recessed cells for eyes beneath a prominent eye brow ridge. A subtle downturned mouth is present as an incised line beneath the nose. A complete, copper alloy, Late Iron Age - Roman, vessel mount in the form of a water fowl (duck), 100 BC - AD150. The object comprises a stylised water fowl with angular beak and triangular cross sectioned body. A short projection from the underside of the water fowl's body forms the rivet that would have attached the mount to the vessel. Water fowl mounts were common across Late Iron Age and Early Roman Britain and Europe and a number of examples can be found on the PAS database e.g. HAMP-552E30, WILT-F259A4

An incomplete cast copper-alloy bovine (bull's head) bucket fitting dated to the late Iron Age to Roman period, c. 100 BC – AD 300. BV Group 9b (two rivet).
The head is three dimensionally moulded and is roughly triangular in form with a convex front and concave back. At the top is a substantial integral circular loop. From this the head widens out with ears projecting out to the side and symmetrical horns projecting from the area in front of the ears. These horn curved forward and inwards before terminating with a worn break and damage around the tips. Due to this dama…

An unusual porcine fitting of the insular La Tène tradition, probably dating from the 1st century BC to 1st century AD. It is possible this fitting is for a vessel, but it is so far unparalleled in type. There are two other ‘head’ fittings known (OXON-6E3722 and HESH-06696B), but they are very different in design, and this find does not appear to be related to them.
The lack of the portrayal of tusks, a hint of a dorsal ridge and large, pointed, forward facing ears are not definitive enough to label this example a wild boar, and so it is classed as a porcine of mix…

A copper alloy bucket mount, in the form of a bulls head. The mount is moulded as one piece and starts with a fixing at the top, a circular fixing with a central hole for the handle of the bucket to attach to. The inside diameter of this is approximately 6mm. Under this is the bulls head. Firstly there is a pair of curved horns, each terminating in a knop, which curve away from the plane along which the bucket would sit, perhaps 20mm high, producing a very 3D effect. Between the horns is a ferrous deposit. The head of the bull is wide and hemispherical in cross section (being…

A copper alloy curved object of uncertain date or function, but possibly a mount dating to the Iron Age (c.300 BC-AD 100).
The object is circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. There is a small gap at the back of the object where the two arms of the hoop do not meet. Due to corrosion damage it is unclear whether this break in the hoop is intentional or accidental. The front of the object is decorated by a long oval moulding. Within this moulding are three raised moulded ridges. The edges of the object have been damaged. The internal hoop is convex and worn. The external diamet…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Iron Age or Roman mount dating to the period c. 300BC - AD 100. It is possibly a decorative shield clip, although it has also been suggested that this type of mount derives from a bucket, tankard or vessel. As this example contains remnants of iron decay in its interior, it has been suggested that it may originate from a bucket style vessel, akin to those of the Aylesford Swarling type (J. Ahmet pers.comm).
It is formed of a single sheet of copper alloy which is now tubular in shape. It has a series of curving ridges which give it a sligh…
