A copper alloy mount possibly from a shield, casket or scabbard dating to the Middle or Late Iron Age. The stud is circular in shape and hemispherical in section. The upper surface of the stud possesses a central circular depression. The depression is decorated with a knurled ring of a white substance, which has tentatively been identified as coral. The ring encircles a small, rounded, circular knop. The underside of the mount is flat with uneven iron corrosion adhering to it. There is a central, circular perforation. The mount has a diameter of 16mm and a thickness of 5mm. A similar s…

Small copper alloy 'Bird' mount. Broken loop with decorative 'bird-head' projection. Difficult to identify date or purpose but (from stylistic parallels) could be Late Iron Age (1st Century AD), but other possibilities are Anglo-Scandinavian or Medieval.

Cast copper alloy stud/mount with enamel. The object has a head that is circular in plan; the head is concave with the concavity filled with blue enamel. The rivet on the reverse is intact. This is integrally cast and circular in section, though slightly tapering. The reverse face of the head is flat. The object resembles objects found in relation to Iron Age scabbard and sword fittings.

The diagonal extension is decoration with two elongated, leaf-shaped cells with the remains of white enamel in them. One terminal has lost its decorative motif, having only the solder remaining; the other terminal has holds a piece of coral or red enamel, this having the form of a ring with a raised boss of the same material. A solid copper-alloy late Iron Age or Roman head of a sheep, ram or possibly goat from a mount or figurine. The head is cast in three dimensions and is triangular in shape with one horn each side. The head measures 18.7mm in length from the top to the end of the nose; it is 9.8mm thick and 12.4 mm wide at the widest point, 24.7mm wide including the horns. The head tapers to a rounded nose with no sign of nostrils. The eyes are represented by indentations on each side of the head with a raised central pupil visible in the left eye. An incomplete openwork cast copper-alloy artefact of late Iron Age/early Romano-British date: probably part of a mount, possibly from a harness. The object is flat and features a sub-oval central field bordered by a coiled bar which protrudes for some of its length but is suggested by incisions otherwise. Within the field is a peltaic removal leaving a heart-shaped segment. Central within the segment are two conjoined circular cells (circle dia.: c. 6.1mm). These both have small central circular punches. The recesses are reminiscent of eyes and would have contained enamel. There …

Iron Age cast copper alloy cylindrical object. The mount is split longitudinally, opening up the cylinder, making it slightly distorted; the original diameter was probably c.10mm. Around each end of the cylinder is a narrow fine groove border; two wide shallow groove then follow inwards and meet in the middle at two closely-spaced, narrow fine grooves; these shallow grooves curve and diverge slightly towards the split, one end terminating in a raised and protruding knop (width 3.5mm, length of protrusion 2mm), the other in a rounded cut-out. It appears that the knop originally fitted i…

Iron Age, Roman or Early Medieval enamelled cast copper alloy boar head mount, possibly a vessel mount. The object appears to be broken in an uneven line under the back of the head. The top of the head has three longitudinal grooves containing colourless enamel; the ears are flat with rounded tops, and project upwards on either side of the head; the eyes are not modelled although there is a shallow transverse groove where they should be; there are two narrow, closely spaced transverse ridges just behind the flattened up-turned snout. On the underside the object is flat below the snout …

At one end is a circular perforation that shows signs of wear to the exterior edge, the remains of a corresponding perforation on the other side of the object are visible, but this is mostly missing due to old breaks. The bottom edge of the object between the two holes is semi-circular in shape. The back face of the object is undecorated, however the front face has two incised diagonal grooves between which is an incised oval shaped decorative motif. The object measure…

An unidentified copper-alloy object. No parallel could be found for this piece, which is probably a mount. The irregular nature, the dark green patina and the use of enamel would seem to point towards an Iron Age to medieval date. The object consists of a sub-rectangular plate of thin section. On the ?upper surface, extending almost to the edge, is a rectangular recess. The base of this recess displays lines of punched marks, probably created to act as a key for the enamel. Only traces of this enamel survive, the most obvious areas being red, with possible remnants of a light green,…

Iron Age/Romano British mount in the form of a bull’s or cow’s head and neck, the twin horns and ears incomplete. All features, ears, eyes, nostrils, mouth and dewlap are finely moulded. At the base of the neck a ribbed moulding clasps a U-shaped vertical channel for attachment. If the channel were horizontal then this would be identified as a bucket mount, cf. an example from Corbridge (MacGregor 1976, cat. no. 315). The bull was regarded as a symbol of strength in Roman Britain and was adopted by several deities (Green 1976, 32). Length 34mm. Width across horns >19.5mm. Weight 39…

Copper alloy mount, dating from the late Iron Age to Roman period. It is symetrical in design but one end has broken. In the centre is a rectangular plate which has a raised central ridge giving it a V-shaped cross section. In the middle of each long side there is an arm which extends touwards. They start off bulbous then narrow half-way along before expanding slightly at the terminal. They have a flat terminal with a semi-circular loop. One of these loops has broken off. The remaining one has a rivet through the hole so it is likely they were used to attach the mount. On the revers…

Part-discoidal fragment of a copper alloy mount with a straight chopped edge, one rivet or attachment hole, rebate around curving edge on one face and a trumpet-like moulding on the other. A V-sectioned groove on this face is the result of a failed attempt at chopping. Diameter circa 25mm. the maximum thickness is 5.5mm. The trumpet moulding is characteristically late Iron Age, but no good parallel for the form of this cap-like object has been noted.

A cast copper alloy strap fitting or mount, probably Late Iron Age to Roman in date. The object is formed from an oval domed, with a flat reverse. The front surface has a raised central ridge and either side has been divided into six further cells, each cell has been infilled with enamel which alternates in colour between white and red. On the reverse is a circular loop, which is set into the otherwise flat surface. The metal is corroded and much of the original surface has been lost.

This is an intriguing little copper-alloy mount in the form of a severed head. The face is a flat oval with the eyes being two deep holes with well defined protruding nose and mouth. Each side has a representation of an ear and the top of the head is surmounted by a large crest which runs from the brow back to the nape of the neck and which may represent the crest on a warrior's helmet. At the base, there is a central fin or fixing tang, aligned front to rear, in which there were at least two rivet holes. Overall this object is thought to be a mount. It is possible that it may…

An incomplete copper alloy mount. The mount is rectangular, flat and has a recessed surface containing blue enamel. This surface is decorated with a repeated line of 'crested-wave' motifs in reserved metal. The reverse of the mount shows evidence of a lead solder, suggesting that this was a decorative strip attached to a larger metal object such as a mirror or vessel handle. The art-style would appear to fit better in the late 1st century BC-1st century AD rather than the 4th/5th century AD.
