An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, probably a mount or escutcheon perhaps from the rim or handle of a copper-alloy vessel of Iron Age date. It has an incomplete sub-circular plate that is D-shaped in section with flat back face and moulded front face, missing one end (base?) due to old breaks. At the top(?) extends an integral but incomplete lug that is rectangular in form and may originally have been cylindrical or tubular. This is decorated on its front face with four incised vertical grooves and has triangular notches on its back face that would have given it its tubular form.…

Probable enamelled copper alloy mount or stud, possibly late Iron Age. The artefact has been affected by corrosion and on the undecorated face this corrosion may have removed all trace of any mounting that may originally have been there. The decorated face consists of a raised eight rayed cross, star, or flower, within a raised circular border. The rays are grouped crudely into pairs and the resultant cells were originally flooded with enamel, the residue of which is present in the form of a dull orange deposit. Hard to date with any certainty but likely to have been produced between …

Iron Age to Roman (-200 to 100) mount: The copper alloy mount is sub-square in plan with the edges being slightly concave. On the upper face the mount has a domed 'X'. In the field there is a pair of fine curved low-relief lines so that it appears to be each arm of the 'X' is a pointed oval. On the reverse the mount is hollow which has traces of a dark grey substance which may have been originally a form of solder. The surface of the mount is abraded, but has patches of a well developed mid grey/green patina. The mount measures 24.36mm long, 23.87mm wide, 8.39mm thick and weighs 13.4…

An incomplete cast copper alloy mount, probably a a decorative shield clip dating from the late Iron Age to the transition into the early Roman period, c. 300 BC-c. 100 AD. The fragment consists of a hollow tubular sheet of copper alloy with the two long edges open slightly, perhaps to facilitate other components or hold the material it was fixed to. The tube is flat-ended and the wear in this area makes it uncertain if the edges are original or breaks from a longer object. The object is decorated with a series of raised collars in a 'reel and bead' design common to other objects, …

Probably an Iron Age cast copper alloy mount. The decorative boss bears a striking resemblance to a great diving beetle. It has similarities to the Roman 'coffee bean' mounts (see LANCUM-39CE20 and LANCUM-BD34A4) but the plate shape is not rectangular and the execution is more Iron Age (see DUR-8078F8 and LVPL-59AD07) or possibly Romano British. It may possibly be from a Roman plate brooch (see SF-DC9058 and SF10009). Could date to anytime between c200 BC and c410 AD but most likely to date from c200 BC to c43 AD. The length is 21mm, the width is 17mm, the thickness is 9mm, and the …

An incomplete copper alloy triskele mount of probable Iron Age date (700 BC - AD 43). The object consists of a circular outer border with a single openwork tendril. Approximately half of the mount is retained; both upper and lower edges terminate in an old break. The mount would have contained three such tendrils with a central perforation. Triskele mounts such as these are believed to have been used as harness decorations/fittings. The metal is a dark green in colour with a smooth surface texture Similar examples can be seen on the PAS database: Unique ID: NARC-7584E7

Late Iron Age to Roman copper alloy flat backed mount consisting of two rounded lobes pierced by iron-filled rivet holes and flanking a stylised human bust. Some areas are partly obscured by iron staining and adhering soil. The hair is depicted by eight grooves running backwards from the forehead. There are no eyes but the nose is prominent. The mouth is represented by a transverse V-sectioned declivity between the nose and the chin. The treatment of the hair is close to that on a possible sword mount from Gillingham,Norfolk (HER 25431, Gurney 1990, 100, fig. 5) and on a mount from Ho…

A semi-circular, flat section, copper alloy mount of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date with a repeated rolling scroll design in relief. Another example (KENT-A83FE3) shows the recesses filled with red enamel (no traces of enamel survive on this artefact). A border (average 2.6mm) encloses the design and is integral with the pattern along the flat edge. A single perforation for an attachment pin or rivet is drilled through the mount at the apex of the arc within a recessed part of the item but slightly off centre. The continuous border and even patination suggests the artefact is compl…

A cast copper alloy anthropomorphic bucket mount, dating to the late Iron Age and of some rarity. The mount consists of a hollow cast humanoid face, probably male, flanked by two corvids, as identified by the tiny spherical eye. The facial features are depicted in plain detail, including the chin, beneath which the head narrows into the beginnings of a neck before it terminates. The human head is elongated and narrows continuously into the rounded neck terminus. The reverse of the head is hollow. A copper-alloy mount of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date. The symmetrical mount takes the form of a cross with a lozenge-shaped cell at its centre.
