Iron Age copper alloy openwork strap fitting. It is oval in plan with openwork motifs formed of a central small pelta with a smaller inverted pelta below and a larger pelta to either side. There is a small oval opening located towards one of the longer edges; this opening has a U-shaped projection on both faces, with the open side of the projections on the outer edge of the fitting. These two U-shaped projections are H-shaped in section, with the middle bar of the H' formed from the main body of the fitting, and are presumably reinforced to accomodate a narrow leather strap. Both fac…

A cast copper alloy looped object in the shape of a stylised bird. This is possibly a vessel mount but it is hard to see how it would have been affixed to a vessel and there are no rivets nor signs of soldering. Late Iron Age or Roman in date. The bird is formed from a lozenge-shaped piece of copper alloy (the body and wings) with two terminals. One terminal is a circular disc and the other is a narrow projection, bent under at the end to form a beak. The lozenge is not flat but has been bent down the middle to form a ridge. There are incised double lines around the edge of the loze…

Incomplete cast copper alloy artefact, possibly a mount, of Iron Age to Roman date. The main body is an elongated oval with a 'D' shaped cross section. There is an incomplete sub-rectangular projection extending from both of the longer edges. There is a small groove where the projections meet the main body. There are worn breaks at the end of both projections; there is a slight curve at the end of one projection, possibly from a (now incomplete) attachment hole. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The artefact is aproximately 17mm long and 18mm wide. It has a mid-green patina. There i…

A Late Iron Age copper alloy bucket mount. This very rare mount measures 62mm by 53mm. The mount is of cruciform shape with an ovoid shape head in the centre. The head is that of a human male and has round eyes, a nose and a visible hairline (all other details have been lost due to wear). At the top of the head is a projecting circular suspension loop, and three ‘arms’ project out from the sides and base of the mount. Although two of these arms are partially broken, all three appear to have had a small circular rivet hole at their terminal. The back of the object is slightly …

Cast copper alloy mount, probably Late Iron Age or Early Roman. The mount is subrectangular in plan and teardrop shaped in section. It is pierced through its width with a circular perforation. Viewed with the pointed end down, the mount is moulded so that each outside edge is raised and slightly flared out. Between the raised edges at the top of the mount is a central raised triangle, recessed to take red glass or enamel, of which some traces survive. The downward point of the triangle extends into a substantial raised bevelled line that continues around the circumference of t…

Cast copper alloy mount. The mount is semicircular in plan and flat in section. When viewed with the straight edge upper most, the front face is decorated with a raised design of two left chasing spirals that extend into the curved field. Alternatively it could also be described as an incised overly curled ‘S’ shape viewed horizontally on its back. Around the spirals, the field of the mount is recessed, possibly to hold enamel. There are no traces of additional material to confirm or deny this theory. The reverse of the mount is unevenly tinned and this extends onto the edges of th…
