An incomplete and bent copper-alloy Late Iron Age to early Roman Colchester bow brooch. It is missing the majority of the hook, the spring and pin due to old breaks, now worn. The wings are rectangular, short and flat. Their front face is decorated with two transverse grooves. They are separated at their centre by an integrally cast rectangular hook. This is a flattened D-shape in section and curves forwards towards the head of the brooch, before terminating in old breaks. The bow is D-shaped in section, undecorated and tapers to a sharp pointed foot. On the back face of the foot i…

Copper alloy brooch fragment, probably a Knotenfibel type. Upper half of the bow and one spring coil only survive; fairly corroded and the lower part of the bow is cracked and probably bent. Below the spring the bow is flattened to 5mm wide and 2mm thick. At the apex of the curve the bow thickens to form a knob flanked by single transverse grooves; below this the section flattens again and tapers slightly. Surviving length 38mm. Type as Burgh (EAA 40, 1988) fig 9 no 1, and Kelvedon (Rodwell 1987) fig 43, though the bows are often more rounded in section than the present eg. Date for th…

Copper alloy brooch, Nauheim or Drahtfibel related type. Missing foot and most of catchplate; bow and pin bent. The pin and spring are a rod of circular section, 1.5mm in diameter, with an external chord. At the bow the rod becomes triangular in section, remaining narrow (2.2mm wide) and tapering to a point. There is a single groove along each side of the bow. The stub of the catchplate has an internal v-shaped nick which may suggest that it was open. Surviving length 36mm. The external chord and possibly open catchplate suggest a date earlier than the common post-Conquest Nauheim deri…

Copper alloy brooch, Colchester type. Missing part of the catchplate; lower part of the pin detached; catchplate bent and bow very bent recently judging by metal condition. The spring and pin appear to be a replacement; the original spring wire is 2mm in diameter and joined to the centre base of the wings as normal, but only one loop survives, with the end tucked under the the forward hook. The replacement spring and pin are made of 1.5mm diameter wire with a separate axis bar. The spring has 7 turns and the chord is held by the forward hook, with the axis bar through the loop of the o…

Copper alloy brooch fragment, ?La Tene III type. Missing spring, pin, damaged bow and catchplate, very abraded. Appears similar to a round section bow Nauheim derivative type, but with a rib moulding around it at the top of bow / start of spring junction. The catchplate is solid and there is a possible upturn of the foot - in profile it is similar to Hattatt no. 9 but with the extra rib/knot at the top. Surviving length 50mm. No close parallels in Riha, Hull & Hawkes 1987, Hattatt. ?Late Iron Age or Roman.
