Possible quern fragment, likely from the base. It looks to be made from a pitted greenstone. Due to its findspot context, it is likely to be Iron Age in dating, although secure dating is impossible, given its fragmentary state, but it is likely to be of prehistoric-Iron Age dates.
It still has evidence of a grinding surface, and the curvature around the edge of the grinding surface (where this surface meets the edge of the stone) suggests that when intact, the entire object was circular in shape. Using this curvature to estimate the overall diameter of the grinding surface, it wo…

Object type: QUERN

A fragment of puddingstone probably representing a fragment of an Iron Age or early Roman puddingstone quern. Only a small chunk, bearing breaks on all faces, survives. Puddingstone is distinctive conglomerate containing rounded red flint pebbles within a siliceous matrix, the main sources of which lie in Hertfordshire. Research carried out by Major in Essex suggests that puddingstone rotary querns were produced here from at least 10 AD until around 160 AD and a similar chronology seems likely in Cambridgeshire (2004, 2-4).
The fragment is 63.8mm long, 4…

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A stone spindle whorl or loom weight, probably of Iron Age to Roman date, (c. 300 BC - AD 400). The object is a cylindrical disc carefully formed from a fine-grained sandstone. It has a very neatly drilled central perforation, 4.5 mm diameter. Both faces are flat and smooth, without decoration. There is some chipping but the object is generally in good condition.
Spindle whorls are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery) as the general form was in use for a long period. However this spindle whorl closely resembles, in material and form, oth…

Chalk spindle whorl, probably prehistoric in date, and most likely to be Iron Age.
It is roughly circular, 16.5mm in thickness, and has a diameter of c.39mm. It has a central piercing c.10mm in diameter.
The edges are slightly angular but smooth. Both faces have a number of scratch marks, probably through age.

A group of 6 Hearth stones of probable Iron Age to Medieval date (400 BC-AD 1800). The stones are sub-ovate, with cracking and pitting resulting in the partial loss of portions of some of the stones. The stones each have a fire blackened side.
The stones are composed of metamorphic stone with a high quartz content. This sort of material is impossible to date without scientific analysis, and there is occupation evidence in this area from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Medieval and Post Medieval to modern period. Given that the stones were recovered from t…

A fragment of rotary hand mill or quern, probably of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date. The fragment is just under half of the upper stone. It is sub-D shape in cross-section with uneven surfaces, rounded edges and corners, and is very worn. The underside is flat with a pitted surface and widespread scratching. The breaks each side are uneven and have the same wear as the other surfaces.
The object measures 223mm in external diameter, 60mm maximum thickness and weighs 1882 grams.
Ruth Shaffrey kindly states that: “The wide hopper is suggestive of LIA/early Roman but i…

Object type: BEEHIVE QUERN

County: Cheshire West and Chester
Workflow stage: Published
Complete rounded upper stone of a beehive quern. The hopper is a straight-sided funnel leading to a long narrow feed pipe. There is a handle slot low down on the side of the stone. The quern is carved from millstone grit and is well finished.
Beehive querns are generally acknowledged as being a native form of rotary quern with a wide date range and a wide variety of forms. Dating is difficult but they seem to have originated in the 2nd century BC (Welfare, A.T., 1985, 'The milling stones' in Bidwell, P.T., The Roman Fort at Vindolanda at Chesterholm, Northumberland, Hist. A stone spindle whorl of probable later Iron Age or Roman date (400 BC - AD 300). The spindle whorl is circular in plan and rectangular in profile. It has been carefully chipped and ground from what seems to be a coarse micaceous sandstone. Through the middle of the whorl is a circular shaped hole set slightly off centre; the hole has straight sides and it has an approximate diameter of 7.5mm. The whorl is undecorated and is relatively unabraded with crisp fresh edges. The whorl is a grey brown colour. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to…

Late Iron Age beehive quern, 155mm high and 270mm in diameter at its base. The object represents the upper part of a Hunsbury type beehive quern. It has roughly carved tapering sides with a sub rectangular hole in its side to take a handle and a hole in its base for the grain to pass through. It is probably made from Derbyshire millstone grit and was found in garden in Brixworth, Northants. The object was in-situ when the house was purchased so its original location is unknown.

Incomplete whetstone for sharpening metal tools or flensing tool for cleaning hides with both ends broken off, engraved with a lobe and circle pattern on one face that is comparable to the decoration seen on Iron Age metalwork. There is also the beginnings of this pattern with S-shaped scrolls on the opposite flat face of the whetstone. This decoration is under, and therefore earlier than, one set of parallel linear grooves on the side edge of the whetstone, that consist of three shorter, wider lines, 5-6 mm in length and 2-3 mm in width, followed by another nine lines, 8 mm in length…

An incomplete upper stone of a rotary quern of coarse-grained greisen, dating from the late Iron Age to the Roman period. The quern is broken across its diameter, the remaining fragment representing about half of the original stone, being D-shaped in plan and plano-convex in section. There is a large fragment missing from the lower surface at one end of the break and a smaller fragment from the upper surface at the opposite end; the damage is mostly ancient although there are several smaller areas of recent plough damage. Allowing for the damage, the external diameter is approximately…

The spindle whorl is 23.2mm in diameter and 13.0mm high; it weighs 27.77g.
The stone is mid greyish brown in colour with part of the outer surface whiter and more powdery. It is relatively heavy for its size. A geologist would need to …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fine-grained compacted Sandstone rotary quern fragment. The upper stone from a large rotary quern, chipped with loss of over half its fabric. The damage includes the removal of large flakes or chunks from the upper surface, and subsequent reddening of the exposed fracture surfaces by burning. The former could relate to the deliberate 'killing' of the object, a behaviour often sought in prehistoric contexts investigated by controlled excavation, while the latter might arise from its subsequent incorporation into a hearth or oven - a pattern of reuse often found in areas devoid of good …
