Possible quern fragment, likely from the base. It looks to be made from a pitted greenstone. Due to its findspot context, it is likely to be Iron Age in dating, although secure dating is impossible, given its fragmentary state, but it is likely to be of prehistoric-Iron Age dates. It still has evidence of a grinding surface, and the curvature around the edge of the grinding surface (where this surface meets the edge of the stone) suggests that when intact, the entire object was circular in shape. Using this curvature to estimate the overall diameter of the grinding surface, it wo…

A stone spindle whorl or loom weight, probably of Iron Age to Roman date, (c. 300 BC - AD 400). The object is a cylindrical disc carefully formed from a fine-grained sandstone. It has a very neatly drilled central perforation, 4.5 mm diameter. Both faces are flat and smooth, without decoration. There is some chipping but the object is generally in good condition. Spindle whorls  are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery) as the general form was in use for a long period. However this spindle whorl closely resembles, in material and form, oth…

A group of 6 Hearth stones of probable Iron Age to Medieval date (400 BC-AD 1800). The stones are sub-ovate, with cracking and pitting resulting in the partial loss of portions of some of the stones. The stones each have a fire blackened side. The stones are composed of metamorphic stone with a high quartz content. This sort of material is impossible to date without scientific analysis, and there is occupation evidence in this area from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Medieval and Post Medieval to modern period. Given that the stones were recovered from t…

Fine-grained compacted Sandstone rotary quern fragment. The upper stone from a large rotary quern, chipped with loss of over half its fabric. The damage includes the removal of large flakes or chunks from the upper surface, and subsequent reddening of the exposed fracture surfaces by burning. The former could relate to the deliberate 'killing' of the object, a behaviour often sought in prehistoric contexts investigated by controlled excavation, while the latter might arise from its subsequent incorporation into a hearth or oven - a pattern of reuse often found in areas devoid of good …

Sandstone bead, round in plan and sub-rectangular in profile with almost straight sides and a small central cylindrical perforation which is 6 mm in diameter. The diameter of the perforation and of the bead, at 23 mm, suggests that it was not wide enough to use as a spindle whorl and the perforation too narrow for a spindle, so its likely function was as a bead or pendant. The bead is pitted where inclusions have been eroded out of the basic fabric and there are still fragments of quartz and felspar visible. Micaceous argillaceous shale spindle whorl, ranging from pink to light brown in colour with a sparkling surface from the mica inclusions. The whorl is oval in plan and flat in profile, with smooth parallel faces, and a slightly off-centre tapering depression in each face which do not meet in the middle and perforate the stone. On one face the depression is 2 mm in diameter and 3 mm deep and the other depression on the opposite face is 4 mm in diameter and 2 mm deep. The depressions have been deliberately drilled from each face but not completed so that the spindle whorl was never used…

A probable fragment of an Iron Age or early Roman puddingstone quern. Only a small chunk, bearing breaks on all faces, survives. Puddingstone is distinctive conglomerate containing rounded red flint pebbles within a siliceous matrix, the main sources of which lie in Hertfordshire. Research carried out by Major in Essex suggests that puddingstone rotary querns were produced here from at least 10 AD until around 160 AD and a similar chronology seems likely in Cambridgeshire (2004, 2-4). Length: 74.91mm, width: 65.36mm, thickness: 56.96mm

Part of a Late Iron Age to Early Roman rotary quern stone. The piece represents just under half of the originally ring-shaped upper stone. The stone is of classic 'bee hive' form, being domed, with a flat underside, and retains part of its inverted-conical hopper, located centrally. Part of a conical handle socket extends horizontally from the outer face, terminating a short distance from the hopper. Another feature of the stone is a recessed perimeter band, which probably represents a seating for a driving strap. The puddingstone itself is a conglomerate comprising small to medium…

Rotary querns first came into use in the Iron age, and were used throughout out the Roman and Medieval periods. The quern is carved from millstone grit and is well finished. Beehive querns are generally acknowledged as being a native form of rotary quern with a wide date range and a wide variety of forms. Dating is difficult but they seem to have originated in the 2nd century BC (Welfare, A.T., 1985, 'The milling stones' in Bidwell, P.T., The Roman Fort at Vindolanda at Chesterholm, Northumberland, Hist. The object is a fragment of a probable quern stone. The stone is a poorly sorted sandstone. It is immature textually and compositionally. This sandstone is found in the upper carboniferous coal measures, possibly from the Warwickshire coal fields. It is an unusual stone for querns compared to other examples found in Warwickshire. In plan the fragment is a sub-trapezoidal shape, which is really incidental to the original shape. Only one edge is possibly a portion of the original surface. All the other side edges appear to be relatively fresh breaks. The lower surface is smooth, …

The upper half of a Late Iron Age or Roman beehive rotary quernstone. The quernstone is of the Yorkshire or unpierced type. The quernstone has a flat, circular base and is cone shaped. There is a central hole which widens towards the top. On the side of the quernstone, there are two circular handle slot, one lower than the other. The lower slot is older than the upper and such an arrangement is not uncommon on beehive querns. The quernstone measures 225mm in height and has a maximum circumference of 300mm. Beehive rotary querns tend to found on Late Iron Age and early Roman settlement sites.

Fragment of rotary quern made from puddingstone. Plano-convex, less than a quarter survives with no trace of the central hole. Probably an upper stone, although there is also no trace of a hole in the outside for a turning stick, or of iron bands to hold a handle for turning. Rounded orange or occasionally orange/red inclusions. Original diameter approx. 320 mm, height 90 mm, too heavy to weigh with a conventional balance. The stone for these querns comes from Hertfordshire and the centre for their manufacture may have been the Verulamium area.
