Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Suffolk

A probable fragment of an Iron Age or early Roman puddingstone quern. Only a small chunk, bearing breaks on all faces, survives. Puddingstone is distinctive conglomerate containing rounded red flint pebbles within a siliceous matrix, the main sources of which lie in Hertfordshire. Research carried out by Major in Essex suggests that puddingstone rotary querns were produced here from at least 10 AD until around 160 AD and a similar chronology seems likely in Cambridgeshire (2004, 2-4). Length: 61.06mm, width: 43.98mm, thickness: 24.77mm, weight: 70.40g

A mostly complete puddingstone 'beehive' type quern dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period, c. 1-160 AD. Ground from a grey conglomerate with large orange, pinkish and black flint inclusions, the quern has suffered some minor losses to its edge though is otherwise preserved in reasonable condition. It is broadly circular in plan and domed, with angled sides that give it a 'beehive' like appearance. It demonstrates a central circular aperture, though this is now clogged at its upper edge with a large broken flint nodule which has apparently been jammed in the aperture- wheth…

A fragment of Hertfordshire pudding stone rotary quern. Part of the top, curved surface survives(42mmx32mm)and more of the lower surface, c.50mm x 60mm. The vertical, curving groove, 23mm in width, which runs through the centre of the quern is also extant. The fragment measures 91.82mm in height, 78.6mm in width and weighs 643g.

Small fragment of a quern made of Hertfordshire puddingstone. The surviving grinding face is about 60 by 40mm, with an edge and top which rises to a thickness of 47mm at the break. Insufficient survives to determine diameter, and it might be either top or bottom stone. The nodules in the matrix are all red with grey. Puddingstone querns are late Iron Age and Roman in date.

Object type: ROTARY QUERN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of rotary quern made from puddingstone. Plano-convex, less than a quarter survives with no trace of the central hole. Probably an upper stone, although there is also no trace of a hole in the outside for a turning stick, or of iron bands to hold a handle for turning. Rounded orange or occasionally orange/red inclusions. Original diameter approx. 320 mm, height 90 mm, too heavy to weigh with a conventional balance. The stone for these querns comes from Hertfordshire and the centre for their manufacture may have been the Verulamium area.
