Incomplete iron and copper alloy linch pin dating to the period c. 100 BC - AD 100. The head is missing. The iron shank is now heavily corroded, the original cross-section indiscernible. The base of the shank fits into a socketed copper alloy foot. Sub-conical in form, traces of a moulded collar are visible at the mouth of the socket under a layer of iron corrosion. Just below, on one side only is a moulded relief ring-and-dot motif. The foot curves along its length and expands into a discoidal terminal. The face of the terminal exhibits a raised circular border expanding in width from…

An incomplete linch pin of late Iron Age to early Roman date, c. 100BC-AD100. The object consists of a circular sectioned iron shank, surmounted at one end by an incomplete copper alloy terminal. The terminal which measures 30.01mm in length terminates with a break. The terminal flairs outwards with a 'flared skirt' where it joins the iron shaft above this is a circumferential collar. The opposite end of the shaft is incomplete. The copper alloy terminal or head of the object has a mid-green patina. The iron shaft is corroded. More complete examples which can be found on the databa…

Probable late Iron Age to early Roman iron and copper alloy linch pin head that is heavily corroded and concreted. It is angled correctly and the disc visible on the object is where it would be expected to be for a linch pin of the period (for example see LANCUM-E78098). Dates to between c100BC and cAD100. The object measures 27 x 17 x 13mm and weighs 6.4g.

An iron and copper alloy artefact which may be the lower part of the shaft and the foot from an Iron Age linch pin. It consists of a circular shaft, bent at one end to almost 90 degrees. At the point where the shaft is bent is a copper alloy section consisting of an oblate spheroid, separated by deep grooves from two collars into which the iron shaft is fitted. The alloy section has a light green patina: the iron section is, as would be expected, very corroded. A close parallel for this object has not been found, so the identification is tentative, but other linch pins with some simil…

A Late Iron Age or Early Roman linch pin foot fitting. The fitting is iron with a thin sheath of copper alloy covering the end. The end of the fitting is flared and slightly dished, rising in the centre to a small, rounded knob. The shaft of the fitting is circular and has broken off just behind the head. The copper sheathing has a dark brown patina. It is 18.4mm in diameter and 17.5mm long. It weighs 12.86gm. This example is a little smaller than others on the database. There is no close parallel on the database but similar examples are SUSS-89C1D7, BH-CE4A95 and a more complete and …

An iron, but copper plated probable linch pin. The pin is very robust and is 106mm long. The pin is D shaped in section and tapers to a blunt point. It is 9.4mm wide at the thick end. The head of the pin is a separate spherical hollow knop which has a diameter of 14.5mm. There are vertical striations along the rounded side of the pin, and sloping transverse scratches on the flat side. The flat side is more worn at either end and not in the middle. Linch pins were used in the Iron Age and Roman periods to fix the wheels to the axels of vehicles. This probable pin is also probably from t…

A lynch pin from a chariot which most probably dates to the late Iron Age. The shank of the pin (18 mm in diameter) which would have been inserted into the ends of the wheel shaft or axle is made of iron. The pin has a copper-alloy head which is circular in section This head is 27 mm in diameter where it joins the iron shank but tapers to 18.7 mm before expanding out into a terminal disc of 32.6 mm in diameter. The head of the lynch pin has two perforations shortly after it joins the iron shank. These may have been a means of securing the head to the shank. There is decoration on the …

The linch pin terminal is cast copper alloy. The external face is a circular 'disc' with rounded edges. The surface of this 'disc' has a sub-circular central hole, through which the iron pin is visible. The 'disc' is sub-circular due to a flattening of the edges on opposite edges. This flattening occurred in antquity as the patina covers these areas. Protruding from the reverse of this 'disc' there is an integral narrowed, circular sectioned cylinder which is most narrow in the centre. On the side of this cylinder there is a circular ?indentation or hole…

Iron linch pin (Group III vase headed), 110mm in length, with decorated, cast terminals of copper alloy. The terminals are 49mm apart, set at each end of a slightly bent, tapering, square-sectioned iron shank, 11 to 9mm across. A horizontal perforation, 5mm in diameter occurs at the base of the upper terminal but this is now largely blocked by iron corrosion. The top of the 21mm diameter upper terminal is decorated by raised motifs comprising (?), with two areas of basketry hatching (Celtic art Style V) executed in the wax before casting. Two undecorated areas between the motifs take t…
