A piece of gold wire made from four strands twisted. The wire was made from 4 smaller wires (diameter c. 2.4 mm) twisted together in a clockwise spiral giving an overall diameter for the twisted wire of 5 mm. The wire piece weighs 7.24g and is 20mm long (unstraightened). The fragment appears to have been cut from a larger piece of wire at one end, although the other end appears to be a break. Analysis shows these wires are made of over 80% gold.

Treasure case 2008 T27 Description: A short section of gold bar Discussion: Non-destructive analysis of the metal content of the bar shows that the core and surface have different concentrations of gold. The core is 50-54% gold whereas the surface is nearer 80%. It is impossible to be certain without destructive analysis of the bar, but the surface of the bar may have been treated by depletion gilding to improve the gold content. As far as is known, objects in the Bronze Age were not treated in this way. Analysis of objects from sites such as Snettisham, has shown that Iron A…

Two strands of circular cross-section wire that have been twisted together and then bent into a small loop. The ends show that they have been deliberately chiselled, suggesting this was cut from a longer length of twisted wires, or a larger object such as a torc or bracelet. Measurements: Diameter: 20.5-22mm; Thickness (single wire): 2mm; Thickness (wires twisted together): 3.5-4.0mm; Weight: 4.04g Discussion: This fragment could have formed part of a torc or bracelet, made up of several twisted wires, which was broken up in antiquity. At Snettisham, and in particular …

A gold unidentified object, possibly a fragment of a torc or bracelet, of probable Iron Age date (c. 150-50 BC). Description: The object is comprised of two wires, sub-circular in cross-section, twisted together. The wires are roughly and irregularly facetted along their length, suggesting they were forged out from a square section rod before being hammered into a more circular cross-section. In many places, hammer marks and striations are visible. Both ends show signs of having been chiselled, suggesting that the original object was deliberately broken up. The fragment itself is…

Gold rotating dorsal muff from a torc. A composite ring constructed of six components comprising two broad semi-circular-sectioned concentric hollow ribs (or tubes) between three narrow twisted wires (probably square-sectioned) soldered to a sheet inner part. The twisted wires appear very worn. The surface of the inner sheet has concentric wear and scratches where the separate parts of the torc were twisted together. External diameter 24mm. Internal diameter19mm. Weight 10.94g. 84-87% gold, 10-12% silver and the remainder being copper

Torc from near Newark, Nottinghamshire (2005 T52) Date: Iron Age Description: An Iron Age multi twisted strand torc with decorated hollow ring shaped terminals. Like the 'Great Torc' from Ken Hill, Snettisham and the Sedgeford Torc, this torc is made from twisted gold wire 'ropes' that were fixed to hollow ring shaped terminals decorated with raised La Tene (so-called 'Early Celtic Art') design. This torc is made from an alloy of gold and silver. The body of the torc is made from 8 'ropes' each made from (possibly) four wires. The wires in each of the 8 ropes are twisted in t…
