A monochrome blue wound glass bead of any undefined era. Similar glass beads have been produced since the early Iron Age to post medieaval periods.  The bead displays signs of wear on the sides suggesting it was worn with other beads or similar on cordage as the central perferation is worn on two sides. The bead appears to have been produced by winding molten glass around a mandrel or iron rod over a small furnace. The bead is slightly uneven suggesting a variation in the heat when produced, which is characteristic of hand made glass beads. Single coloured h…

An incomplete bead or possible pin head, probably made of glass and dating from the Late Iron Age to Early Roman period. The bead is broadly spherical, with three protruding bosses, and a circular-sectioned perforation extends through it. A segment of the bead is missing due to old breaks, and the cavity thus created has a pitted reddish surface. The 'glass' is dark brown, and the bosses are decorated with incised spirals. The patterns are reminiscent of the painted white swirls on dark blue glass beads of Oldbury type (see PAS record YORYM-7DAAE6). The object measures 8.87mm in diame…

A fragment of a glass annular bead. Only about quarter of the bead survives. It is 15.3mm long, 7.2mm wide and 5.6mm thick. It is sub-circular in section and would have had a radius of about 9mm. The bead is made of dark blue glass and is decorated with five trailed then smoothed circumferential bands of white glass. There is also a pinkish substance on the side of the central hole. Beads with similar decoration on the database are LEIC-70C974 and LEIC-8B5E97. It is very difficult to date glass beads as they were used throughout the Iron Age, Roman and Early Medieval periods.

This is a good example of a blue glass annular bead and given the deep cobolt blue of the main body of the ring and its diameter at 20mm, it is probably from the Roman period. The glass has been decorated with an opaque white wavy line and this is typical of the type (wave-decorated beads) as described in Margaret Guido's 'The Glass Beads of the Prehistoric and Roman Periods'. In particular, this example fits within the group 5 type 10d style. The central hole is a little irregular and is slightly off centre. The diameter of the hole is 9mm.

Just under half of an annular translucent light blue glass bead with white opaque swirling wave motif around the circumference. Guido's group 5, type A. According to Guido (1978), this style of polychrome bead was popular for a long period in the British Isles, appearing first in fourth or third century BC graves at Arras (Yorkshire). However, the size of this example (just under 22mm in diameter) and its colour (light as opposed to cobalt blue) suggest that this bead might belong to the post-Roman period (Guido 1978, p. 63-64). In Guido's later study of Anglo-Saxon glass beads (1999)…

A glass bead, made from four different colours of glass (blue, white, red, yellow). The bead is a cylinder with straight sides. It was made by mixing two strands of blue and white glass, and then wrapping the glass around a thin metal rod (the hole left by the rod has a diameter of 3.2mm); the glass mixture was then dragged this way and that around the rod, to mix up the patterns on the surface. Tiny blobs of yellow glass were then added fairly uniformly around the sides; onto each blob was added an even smaller one of red glass. The whole bead was then heated and rolled on a smooth su…

The bead is a circular shape in plan, with a regular rounded edge in profile, Guido describes the shape as 'thick annular'. It has a central hole which is straight and sub-circular in cross section. The background colour of the bead is a dark blue colour which is decorated with white spiral which starts near the centre of one face and continues around the bead, but forming sub-concentric rings on the opposite face. On the less decorated face, evenly spaced around the hole are three small sub-circular indentations which maybe part of the manufacturing process or accidental.

The bead is a sub-spherical shape, with a narrow central sub-circular hole which has straight sides. The diameter of the hole is 2.07mm. The bead in profile has a slightly flattened base. Areas of the surface of the bead has discoloured slightly, most likely due to the conditions of the soil. The colour of the bead is a translucent brown/yellow colour.

The bead is an oval shape in plan with slightly flattened terminals. Through the longest axis of the bead is a hole with straight sides. One terminal of the hole has a large chip. This chipped area has slight compression ripples, similar to that of knapped flint. The colour of the bead appears to be a very dark opaque brown.

Just under half of a large bead made from translucent deep blue glass with a rather carelessly inlaid trail of twisted cable. The cable appears to have been made from white, dark blue and a slightly lighter blue, and is 3 mm wide. The surviving inlay makes one complete and half of a second swag, with the cable being stretched out and crumpled at the bottom of the complete swag. Original diameter c. 25 mm, diameter of perforation c. 4 mm. Twist-decorated beads are known from the late Iron Age/early Roman period and the early Anglo-Saxon period (7th century). There are good parallel…
