An Iron Age-Roman glass bead, dating 800BC - AD100. This bead belongs to Guido's class 6, Oldbury type.It is made from blue and white glass and is roughly circular in shape, with a hole through the centre formed during manufacture with a mandrel. The white glass forms spirals at various points around the outside of the object. At these points nodules have been formed in the blue glass to emphasise the design. The nodules and spirals alternate between pairs and single features. A similar example has been recorded with the PAS (LON-041951), though that example had a copper alloy rin…

A Late Iron Age or Roman (c.300 BC - AD 410) blue glass bead with a white trail. The bead is translucent and a bright royal blue in colour. A marvered white trail of opaque glass has been laid around the outside in a series of broad U shaped loops, with a shorter V shape at the point the ends of the trail meet (and presumably had run out of room). There is recent damage to the outside surface of the bead. The bead measures 18.36mm in diameter (internal diameter of the central hole 7.73mm), 9.06mm in thickness and weighs 3.31g. Cf. Guido, 1978; plate I, 10d.

A fragment of an annular glass bead. It is very pale blue/green with light iridescent weathering on all surfaces. There are several strain cracks close to the perforation on one end. It is 10mm high and weighs 1.91g. Monochrome annular beads have been found in both late Iron Age and Roman contexts and are difficult to date precisely (Guido 1978, 65-6 group 6iia, 140-2). Blue/green examples are the most common, but dark blue, yellow/brown and greenish colourless examples are also known.

An almost complete small globular dark blue glass bead. It is 6.5mm high and has a diameter of 7mm. There is a large chip on one side and a groove which extends from the perforated end on one side. The perforation at this end is tear-drop shaped and has dimensions of 2.3 x 3mm. At the other end, the diameter of the perforation is 1.5mm.It weighs 0.31g. Small globular beads are known in both late Iron Age and Roman contexts, occurring throughout the Roman period (Guido 1978, 69-71, group 7).

A complete small blue/green globular glass bead. At one end it can be seen where glass was trailed and then cracked-off, to form the bead, and this end is also flattened. The bead is 7.8mm high, has a diameter of 8mm. The diameter of the perforation is 1.5mm and it weighs 0.56g. Small globular beads are known in both late Iron Age and Roman contexts, occurring throughout the Roman period (Guido 1978, 69-71, group 7).

A complete small blue/green globular glass bead. There is a small chunk missing from close to the perforation on one side, which may be the result of a fault during manufacture. It is 7.3mm high, has a diameter of 7.5mm and weighs 0.49g. The diameter of the perforation varies and measures 1.5-2.5mm. Small globular beads are known in both late Iron Age and Roman contexts, occurring throughout the Roman period (Guido 1978, 69-71, group 7).

A complete translucent dark blue glass melon bead. There are seven unevenly spaced vertical grooves. Light chipping at one end are indicative of abrasion with another bead. The other end has no signs of wear at the perforation. There are two large ‘pits’ on the external surface which are the result of air bubbles in the glass. The bead is 8.1mm high and weighs 1.54g. It has a diameter of 12.4mm and the perforation has a diameter of 3.5mm. Sally Worrell adds: Glass melon beads are present in Europe in the pre-Roman period, and 16 were found in a La Tene burial at the Wetwan…
