A late Iron Age/ early Roman (100 BC - AD 200) copper alloy miniature terret or harness fitting. It comprises an oval ring with a flat bar between two moulded-rib terminal ends and resembles a terret in shape. To the reverse this bar conceals a loop, projecting at 90 degrees to the ring and offset to one side. The ring is D-shaped in cross-section, being flat to the reverse, and expands from 2.3mmx1.6mm at the top (where it is worn) to max.7.2x3.4mm just before the terminal. The loop is rectangular and D-shaped in cross-section, its inside surface being flat. The loop measures 13.7mm …

A fragment of a late Iron Age to early Roman period (circa 100BC - AD 410), copper alloy strap-mounted terret. The fragment consists of a small section of the large circular loop with part of a separate rectangular loop extending below. The section of circular loop has a circular cross-section and is solid (measuring 7.4mm in diameter). It thickens slightly to 9.3mm diameter where the rectangular loop extends. At this point the main loop becomes U-shaped in cross-section, being hollow to the underside. The rectangular loop extends from the base of the circular loop by 10.4mm, bends a…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy probable strap union (harness fitting) of Late Iron Age/Romano-British date. It consists of a bar of sub-rectangular cross-section, broken at one end. At the other end is a terminal formed of a pair of conjoined bosses from the tops of which extend rounded tabs between which is a bar of circular cross-section. It is assumed that a strap would have been looped around the gap between the latter bar and the bosses. The main bar has a deep longitudinal groove running along the centre of its lower surface. This is far more shallow as it divides t…

A fragment of a corroded, cast copper-alloy terret (rein guide) dating from the late Iron Age or early Roman periods. This comprises around a third of the hoop, and has been broken just after the bar begins, and just beyond a protruding moulded platform, of the 'cushion lobed' form. The hoop terminates in a broadly rectangular 'skirt' (19.2 by 17.2mm), squashed in on one side. Vestiges of the bar within the skirt suggest that it was thin, rectangular in cross-section with rounded corners. The bar has been pressed up against the side of the skirt. The loop is sub-circular in cross-se…

A fragment of a corroded, cast copper-alloy terret (rein guide) dating from the late Iron Age or early Roman periods. This comprises around half of the hoop, and has been broken at the junction of hoop and bar, and the middle of the central pair of back-to-back sub-hemispherical lipped protrusions, respectively. The collar at the junction of hoop and bar is broadly sub-oval: 11.9 by 10.8mm. Vestiges of the bar suggest that it was rectangular in cross-section with rounded corners. A worn but complete cast copper-alloy strap junction dating to the Late Iron Age to Early Roman period. It comprises three conjoined loops; centrally between the two upper loops and above the bottom loop is a highly celticised human head. The head is convex with hollow reverse and crudely rendered, albeit wear might obscure some original features; only the two punched eyes are now obvious. The face measures 14.4mm long and 9.05mm wide. The loops have diameters ranging from c. 14.8 - 15.8mm. Such tri-looped strap junctions have been found elsewhere and often depict either a human face …
