Iron linch pin (Group III vase headed), 110mm in length, with decorated, cast terminals of copper alloy. The terminals are 49mm apart, set at each end of a slightly bent, tapering, square-sectioned iron shank, 11 to 9mm across. A horizontal perforation, 5mm in diameter occurs at the base of the upper terminal but this is now largely blocked by iron corrosion. The top of the 21mm diameter upper terminal is decorated by raised motifs comprising (?), with two areas of basketry hatching (Celtic art Style V) executed in the wax before casting. Two undecorated areas between the motifs take t…

Three sections of thin and very corroded iron ring. The ring is bound in places with three short sections of copper alloy. One of the copper alloy sections appears to form a terminal, suggesting that the ring may once have been penannular. Possibly a vessel mount or fitting?

The linch pin terminal is cast copper alloy. The external face is a circular 'disc' with rounded edges. The surface of this 'disc' has a sub-circular central hole, through which the iron pin is visible. The 'disc' is sub-circular due to a flattening of the edges on opposite edges. This flattening occurred in antquity as the patina covers these areas. Protruding from the reverse of this 'disc' there is an integral narrowed, circular sectioned cylinder which is most narrow in the centre. On the side of this cylinder there is a circular ?indentation or hole…

A lynch pin from a chariot which most probably dates to the late Iron Age. The shank of the pin (18 mm in diameter) which would have been inserted into the ends of the wheel shaft or axle is made of iron. The pin has a copper-alloy head which is circular in section This head is 27 mm in diameter where it joins the iron shank but tapers to 18.7 mm before expanding out into a terminal disc of 32.6 mm in diameter. The head of the lynch pin has two perforations shortly after it joins the iron shank. These may have been a means of securing the head to the shank. There is decoration on the …

An iron object. The object is quite badly corroded and it is hard to discern what it may have been. However, it was found in the same area as an Iron Age linch pin, and is roughly the same size and shape as the linch pin's head. There is a possibility that this item also relates to an iron age chariot.

An incomplete iron mirror dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period (300 BC to AD 150). The handle is made from iron and its surface is very pitted. The body of the handle consists of a circular-section bar decorated with four spherical mouldings. The diameter of the bar measures a maximum of 16.63mm. At one end is a circular section ring, which is now broken. The diameter of this ring is 52.69mm; at the other is a similar circular-section, semi-circular extension. This extension has a rectangular slot cut into it to hold the mirror, which is now missing. The length of the han…

It comprises a long slender iron dagger housed within an ash-wood sheath. Both are in a reasonable state of preservation although the dagger's organic hilt-plates and pommel, and the sheath's suspension loop(s) and chape, are missing. Initial cleaning of the surface corrosion products on the sheath in the laboratory by Rebecca Lang has revealed negative traces clearly demonstrating the former existence of a series of overlapping ? copper al…

Incomplete probable harness ring. The object consists of an solid oval-sectioned iron ring with bronze casing, which has split as the iron has expanded due to corrosion. This splitting is visible along the internal and external line of the ring, which obscures the details regarding whether the copper alloy casing was U-shaped and hammered round, or a complete cylinder. The external surface of the bronze casing is decorated with transverse ribbing. The object is similar to a simple terret ring found with two other probable harness rings and two terret rings in a context dating to circa…

They are rarely found in the British Isles, with examples from the Berwyn Mountains of Wales (Savory, H. Guide Catalogue of the Early Iron Age Collections 1976, 20) and Cold Kitchen Hill, Wiltshire (Cunliffe, B. Iron Age Communities in Britain 1974, fig.14:2.5). c.800 - c.600 BC

Possible iron ring-headed pin with bent ring-head. The terminal of the ring-head has not been moulded onto the stem and this might betray its early date. Considering the not too much corroded state it might be medieval, although the earliest ring-headed pin start in Hallstatt D (Early Iron Age) and this specimen would be of the right shape and length for a period as early as that.

Iron axehead, possibly Late Iron Age but more likely Post-Medieval or modern. If it did date from the LIA, it would be a very rare Lancashire find indeed. The object is heavily corroded, but the socket and blade are still readily recognisable. Early Iron Age axes were made from forged, not wrought iron and it was difficult to form whole 'sockets' as were known from LBA socketed axes. For iron axes like this the wings needed to be reheated and hammered into the required shape. However, iron axes like this survive only very rarely and since post medieval and some modern tools apply this …

Fragment of Late Iron Age welded Iron sword. The fragment represents the top part of the blade and the sword tang. The pommel, guard and grip are entirely missing so it is impossible to say what form these took beyond the basic make-up of the sword grip. However the hilt edge (where the tang extends from the top of the blade) is straight which means that the sword is probably of La Tène III type , Stead type IV(See Stead, 2006, British Iron Age swords and scabbards, The British Museum Press, page 9 and figure 3). The fragment is in very poor condition, with the original surface an…
