One-piece Colchester brooch, complete except for half the spring and the pin. The wings are relatively long, and straight in section; there is decoration of vertical mouldings. The spring half which survives is of five coils and the chord passes under a long forward-facing hook ending in a flat disc. The hook is stuck so closely to the bow that it looks as if it were made in one piece and the hole drilled later! The bow is quite wide and flat, and a little bent. It is decorated with three broad vertical flutes, the central one filled with two vertical zigzag mouldings. The decora…

Head and part of bow from a Langton Down or a Rosette brooch. The head consists of two pieces of thin sheet AE bent round to form a spring cover. The fragmentary spring is of AE. The bow has vertical ‘reeding’ – lots of fine grooves – and runs down to an old break.

Head and tiny fragment of bow from a Langton Down or a Rosette brooch. The thin sheet spring cover is now fragmentary; inside is a complete copper alloy spring of three and four coils in each half, plus a stub of pin. The spring is much shorter than the spring cover, which seems odd. The bow has a moulding across the top and hints of vertical grooves below. The break is old.

Copper-alloy pin from a bow brooch, with half or less (three coils) of its spring. They are made from circular-section wire (2 mm diameter) and the spring is apparently coiled around a corroded iron axis bar. Quite large (length 46 mm, diameter of spring 8-9 mm) which perhaps argues for a date early in the range.

Fragment of a crescentic, possibly a flat-ring terret? The central channel, which has one raised circle, may have originally contained enamel. When complete, the decoration on terrets is generally symmetrical. This example is only decorated on one side. 14mm wide, 2mm thick. A 1st century BC/AD date seems most likely.

Probably an early exotic brooch type 7th to 4th cent. BC or possibly earlier, although it is not entirely clear how the pin, hinge & catch-plate would have worked. Brooches with knobs like this have been found in Britain.. For example there is one from Cold Kitchen Hill in Wiltshire that is quite similar (see Jope 2000 plate 5:d). The right angle extension at the base of the ‘bow’, & the knobs are not dissimilar to types of early Italian brooches.
