Probably an Iron Age cast copper alloy mount. The decorative boss bears a striking resemblance to a great diving beetle. It has similarities to the Roman 'coffee bean' mounts (see LANCUM-39CE20 and LANCUM-BD34A4) but the plate shape is not rectangular and the execution is more Iron Age (see DUR-8078F8 and LVPL-59AD07) or possibly Romano British. It may possibly be from a Roman plate brooch (see SF-DC9058 and SF10009). Could date to anytime between c200 BC and c410 AD but most likely to date from c200 BC to c43 AD.
