Record ID: SOM-933834
Object type: COIN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy Iron Age stater. South Western (Durotriges) uninscribed type. These coins were in production from the mid 1st century BC, probably into the 1st century AD and appear to have continued to be in use well into the middle of this century (Hobbs 1996, 24). So called 'struck bronzes' such as this one probably represent the very debased end of the struck silver series and analysis indicates that they often still contain a very small amount of silver (ibid.)
Diameter: 20.05mm, Thickness: 3.50mm, Weight: 2.55g. Registered as CCI 10.1090.

Four small abraded shards of Iron Age earthenware vessels. The first two probably belong to fabric group 4 identified from material found during excavations in Somerset at Meare Village East (Coles 1987, p.184) and the second two to group 1 (ibid. p.183).
1. Length: 28.09mm, Width: 22.27mm, Thickness: 9.37mm, Weight: 6.68g
Probably a body shard. The edges are very worn and well rounded. One surface is grey in colour and the other buff. The fabric is smooth and rather soapy to the touch. It is tempered with rare mica and medium amounts of poorly sorted calcareous fragments (

A complete copper alloy Egyptian statue of Osiris. He wears the double-feathered Atef crown with uraeus and holds the crook and flail in mummiform fashion. On the back are two attachment loops, one in the centre of the figure's shoulders and one just above the base (which has been bent upwards), with a further loop to the left of the base. These together with a tab below the base are probably to allow it to be mounted on a wooden base. John Taylor from the department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan at the British Museum believes it to be genuine. He suggests that 'there are many very close…

A fragment of a copper alloy circular arm ring, probably of mid to late Iron Age date. The section comprises around 1/3 of a complete circular bracelet. It is sub-triangular in section. At one end is a deep circular recess and at the other end a similarly shaped projection, which presumably would have allowed the section to be attached to the rest of the bracelet, the projection fitting into another recess and vice versa at the other end. The exterior of the bracelet is decorated with a crude and uneven central groove, flanked on either side by short parallel scratches along the outer…

Three iron spear heads, thought to be of Iron Age date. One small head and two larger ones. All in fairly good condition - one with a small amount of wood in one socket.
Treasure report from Rachel Seagar-Smith (Wessex Archaeology):
A rectangular post-built structure F245 defined by at least six postholes was located in area A. The structure measured 5.00m by 3.60m across and was aligned NNE to SSW. The postholes were tightly packed with stones and contained the remains of square section posts measuring up 0.20m by 0.40m across that had clearly been burnt in-situ. A cache of th…

Fragment of a Hod Hill type copper alloy brooch. Only the head and bow survive. The fragment is misshapen and crudely formed. The head consists of a tube-like strip of metal, projecting slightly beyond each side of the bow. This is hollow and contains the remains of the axis bar, which would have held a hinged pin in place. There is a slot in the centre of the head where the pin would have sat. This is heavily worn, presumably through use. The pin is now missing. Below this the bow begins to curve away from the head immediately. It is roughly rectangular in shape before splaying out at…
