A worn and incomplete large cast copper alloy Iron Age enamelled flat-ring terret, dating from c. 50 BC to c. AD 70. The terret ring retains over a third of the flat decorated ring, a short length of the strap bar and one roundel. The flattened ring of the terret is decorated with elaborate 'S' shaped La Tene style scrolls, conjoined into moustache-like motifs connected by alternating top and bottom scroll arms. These motifs are raised within a background that would have contained red enamel, but most of this is now absent. A small circular inset of enamel is retained in the centre of…

An incomplete cast copper alloy 'Horn Cap', dating to the later Iron Age. The horn cap is missing its two ends, which on other examples is elaborately decorated. There is a circular void through the centre which is very narrow in the base section but appears to widen significantly when it becomes visible in the upper section. Both upper and lower sections contain corrosion within. The rims of the horn cap are damaged, probably through post-depositional damage. One side of the horn cap may display an area of wear, having a shine that is not present elsewhere on the shaft. This i…

A complete cast copper alloy strap mounted terret ring of Late Iron Age to Roman date. The terret is of the 'simple' type and comprises an ovate or D-shaped loop with a narrowed bar, rectangular in cross-section, across the base, separated from the main loop by two expanded collars. The recess would have allowed attachment to a leather strap which would have held the terret in place, enabling the reins to move freely through the main frame. The loop is widest and thickest at the base and tapers in diameter to the top. This terret is undecorated but survives in very good condition.…

A complete cast copper alloy terret ring (rein guide) of late Iron Age date in very good condition. The Terret ring has a thick banded hoop with recessed attachment point bound either side by the trumpet-end terminals of the main hoop. On the crest of the terret ring is what can be described as a 'crown', an integral moulding in the shape of a 'W' with an acorn-knop terminal on the crest of each lozenge cross sectioned arm. The terret measures 46.7mm wide, 54.3mm high and is 14.6mm thick behind the stops. The recessed bar is 27.3mm long, 9.3mm tall and 4.9mm thick.

An incomplete cast copper alloy harness loop fitting, or terret ring (rein guide) of Late Iron Age or Roman date. The terret is a Spratling (1972) Group IX (knobbed type). The terret now consists just under half of the original D-shaped terret ring survives; Two knobs survives, one located at 9 o'clock and the other at 12 o'clock. These knobs have circular collars from the centre of which protrudes a second, smaller rounded knob that protrudes slightly above the level of the collar. The closest example in Spratling (1972) is no. 86. At the base of the frame is an expanded collar which…

A complete cast copper alloy harness fitting, a flat-ring terret of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date. The artefact is intact and in good condition and is an excellent example of its type.
The terret ring is sub-oval (D-shaped) in plan with an irregular sub-oval (D shaped) cross section and a small, thin rectangle-sectioned bar at the base flanked at either end by two oval mouldings that expand to form the loop of the terret. Each of these moulding has a central circumferential groove separating the mouldings into two parts. Both sides of the terret ring are decorated with geometri…

An incomplete copper alloy harness fitting or terret ring of simple type and dating to the late Iron Age date. Almost one-half of the object remains. The hoop of the terret is circular in section with a wide knopped collar from which the worn and bent remains of the rectangular cross-sectioned bar projects. The hoop itself tapers away from the collar curving steadily and terminating in a worn break. The outer hoop is decorated with a moulded raised linear band the runs around the outer edge. This object dates to the later Iron Age, c. 200 BC to c. AD 100, and probably to the later end…

A cast copper ally harness fitting or terret ring, dating to the later Iron Age (c. 150 BC - c. AD 43). The terret ring is roughly D-shaped in plan, with a narrowed strap or reign bar wirth a rectangular cross section at the base of the object; either side of this bar at the terminals of the rounded outer loop of the frame are rounded knops bordered by simple lined decoration of the la tene style. The loop of the terret ring narrows from the knopped terminals towards the centre of the outer frame. At this point is another rounded protrusion that consists of three parts; a central stri…

A complete cast copper alloy harness fitting or mini terret ring dating to the Late Iron Age / early Roman period (c. 100 BC - AD 100). The harness fitting is annular in plan with a roughly D-shaped cross section; both the width and the depth varies and gives the object a slightly crude appearance; however, the object is decorated around its outer circumference with a moulded crenellation, to either side of which are double lines; both these and the crenellation terminate at a constriction in the main band; it is likely that a strap was secured around this area and it is worn smooth t…

A cast copper alloy object, possibly a harness or even cart fitting and likely dating to the Iron Age. The fitting is key-hole shaped in cross section, with the base being slightly convexed and containing the remains of two iron rivets set at opposing ends. The upper, curved portion of the fitting has multiple grooves across the width, some of which retain what appears to be degrading red enamel. Overall the object is quite big and heavy, and it has been suggested that it is too big for a sword fitting (P. Reavill, pers. comm). Again it may be quite large for a harness fitting but may…

A cast copper alloy terret ring, dating from the late Iron Age to early Roman period. The terret ring is incomplete with only about a quarter remaining; it has a sub-ovoid cross section. There is a small pair of lip-type mouldings protruding from the narrowing loop of the ring while at the opposite end is a larger ribbed platform protrusion that separates the main body of the terret from a smaller moulded section. In between the projections are two smnall sub-cicular depressions which would have once held enamel, now long lost. Terret rings of this type date from c. 100 BC to AD 43.

A cast copper alloy terret of platform type dating from the Late Iron Age (c. 200 BC to AD 43). The terret ring is incomplete with only approximately a quarter of the complete object surviving. The terret ring is of the 'platform' type; the sub-circular knop is decorated with multiple incised lines around its outer edge while just above this knop on the terret ring is 3 shaped recesses - triangular, circular, triangular - of which each would have been filled with enamel, non of which survives. A number of similar terret rings with this style of decoration are recorded on the database…
