A copper-alloy end-looped cosmetic mortar dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period. The body of the mortar is hemispherical in section with a U-shaped depression within which cosmetics could be ground. The grinding surface is scored and corroded with only some of the original surface remaining. The mortar tapers to a rounded point at one end and at the other to a suspension loop. Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Darlington
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy belt phalera or 'fob', probably dating to the first century AD, although the date range of such objects is a subject of some debate. If it is from a shoulder belt, it would have to date to the period AD 150 to 250. The fob is circular in shape and openwork in design. An outer ring, which is hemispherical in section, encloses three pointed oval 'petals' arranged in a trefoil motif. Each petal has a moulded rib at its point. These 'petals' radiate from a central cylindrical knob, which has a rounded terminal. The knob is enclosed within a deep circumferential groove. On t…

A copper alloy button and loop fastener. The head consists of two flat, circular discs which are joined together. The diameter of each disc is approximately 13mm. On the reverse, in the area where the discs join, an oval section shank projects for 6mm at right angles to the disc head. It is then bent at 90 degrees so as to lie parallel to the disc heads. The shank extends to form a triangular loop, which is worn. The triangular loop measures 25.2mm x 17.63mm externally and 9.91mm x 6.42mm internally. The button and loop fastener is similar in form to Wild's Type 1 although the disc he…

Object type: BRIDLE BIT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
The copper alloy bit consists of a circular section bar, measuring 8mm in diameter and 64mm in length. The bar has a central ribbed moulding and a further moulding at either end. At each end of the bar is an oval loop measuring 21mm in length and 23mm in width. The interior edges of the loop are worn so that the loop's perforation appears sub-triangular. This would suggest that the bridle bit was actually used.

The stubs of two circular section arms, measuring 3.2mm in length, (probably broken in antiquity and worn away by water action) protrude at right angles from the top of the torso. On the front of the torso…
