A gold terminal of an Iron Age torc; the object was found by Dr Hammond whilst metal detecting as part of a survey conducted by SHARP (Sedgeford Historical and Archaeological Research Project) as part of their long running study of the history and archaeology of the parish of Sedgeford. See here for more information. This terminal comes from the same Iron Age torc or neck ring discovered in 1965. When the 'Sedgeford Torc' was originally found one of the two terminals was missing. This discovery is almost certainly the missing terminal. It is identical in size and design to the earli…

During Fieldwork undertaken by the Hallaton Fieldwork group in Leicestershire in 2000, a series of metal detector finds were made by Mr Ken Wallace. The material, including 146 British Iron Age coins and 59 Roman coins, was suggestive of a significant Iron Age site, something quickly confirmed by excavations carried out by the University of Leicester Archaeological Service (ULAS). An inquest held in 2003 found the estimated 2,500 coins and associated finds to be Treasure. The associated material consisted of a silver-gilt iron cavalry helmet, scrap metal and ingots, fragmentary brooch…

In August 2003 members of the Sedgeford Historical and Archaeological Research Project (S.H.A.R.P.) discovered 20 Iron Age gold coins concealed within or associated with a cowbone, using a metal-detector in the course of archaeological excavation. The objects were brought to the British Museum for examination on 22 September. 19 further coins were discovered in the vicinity. All 39 coins belong to the same type. They are so-called 'Gallo-Belgic E' staters, made in the first century BC, probably in northern France. These coins are frequently found in southern Britain where they circu…

Decorated bronze mirror with handle. Silver Knotenfibel brooch in two pieces. Thirty pieces of pottery from a pedestal urn, flat based jars and other vessels. All these objects were found in close proximity and probably come from a disturbed grave. Cremation burials became a common way to bury the dead in parts of south-east England in the 1st Century BC. Most graves contain pottery vessels used for drinking or eating. The richer graves sometimes contain decorated bronze mirrors. Silver brooches are very rare finds from Iron Age Britain, and only about nine or ten others are known.…

The present coin dates to the late British Iron Age, circa 50-30 BC. It is a 'Climping type' gold stater (see Cottam et al 2010, Ancient British Coinage, p. 49, no. 524). The current specimen was made using the same pair of punches (or dies) as the eight specimens reported in 2001, the two coins from the 2004 addenda (2004T114) and the single 'Climping type' from the 2006 addenda (2006T107; SUSS-861DE4). The 'Climping type' is a left facing version of the common 'British L' series.
