Iron Age (c. 400 BC to AD 100) vase-headed linch pin terminal: The cast copper alloy terminal is oval in section with a flattened disc, which on the outer face is decorated with high-relief motifs in the form of comma-leaves, a pellet, and duck-guilloche. The motifs together appear to form a duck-like figure. Beneath the disc the terminal is narrowed forming a shallow neck before the terminal then widens forming a convex profile. The lower face of the terminal has a square- section iron rod protruding slightly from the base. On opposite side faces of the terminal there is a deep conic…

A cast copper alloy Iron Age linch pin terminal, which is the foot of the pin. The linch pin terminal is an irregular shape. In profile it is a sub conical, whose tip terminates with a large flat integral disc, which has then been angled to become vertical. The reverse of the disc is convex and has an integral triangular tip of the conical portion. The disc is decorated with a quatrefoil with each arm having a convex and concave edge. The field around the quatrefoil is filled with red enamel, which is incomplete. Below the disc decoration, on the conical body of the terminal, there is …

A cast copper alloy and iron linch pin terminal. The copper alloy element of the linch pin is circular in section, which varies in diameter. In profile the terminal has a sub ‘H’ shape with the central portion being particular wide. The outer and inner edges are further decorated in profile with a groove forming a ‘V’ shape. The outer surface is decorated with a central circular cell which is possibly filled with dark coloured enamel. There is then, a low-relief concentric ring which has traces of possibly corroded enamel. The corrosion has a light green colour which may sugges…

A cast copper alloy Iron Age linch pin terminal, which is the foot of the pin. Only a fragment of the terminal remains. The lynch pin terminal originally would have had a sub conical shaped profile, whose tip terminates with a large flat integral disc which has then been folded to one side so the disc is vertical. What remains of the terminal is the disc portion. The disc has abraded edges and composed of a domed crescentic border. Within this border there is a central circular cell which has traces of red enamel. This cell is within a concentric ring. The field between the ring and ce…

The object is a linch pin terminal, which is the foot of the pin. It is made from cast copper alloy with a fragment of the iron pin remaining, and is decorated with red and yellow enamel. These lynch pins date to the late Iron Age period. The linch pin terminal is an irregular shape. In profile it is a sub conical shape, whose tip terminates with a large flat integral disc which has then been folded to one side so the disc is vertical. One side of the terminal is a similar to a slug, it is curvaceous, and decorated, towards the base of the conical, with three circular cells, two fille…

The linch pin terminal is cast copper alloy. The external face is a circular 'disc' with rounded edges. The surface of this 'disc' has a sub-circular central hole, through which the iron pin is visible. The 'disc' is sub-circular due to a flattening of the edges on opposite edges. This flattening occurred in antquity as the patina covers these areas. Protruding from the reverse of this 'disc' there is an integral narrowed, circular sectioned cylinder which is most narrow in the centre. On the side of this cylinder there is a circular ?indentation or hole…

The item is a fragment of a 1st century BC/AD linch pin terminal. Originally the terminal would have been a horizontal crescentic shaped type, however, only less than half remains. One flat face of the item is decorated. The border of this face is a series of sub-parallel notches on a high-relief platform. The internal edge of this platform is decorated with a single ridge. The corner of the crescentic shape of the linch pin terminal is missing. The break does not appear to be recent. The break has an irregular surface, which is a similar colour to the surfaces with a well developed pa…

The shape of the terminal is crescentic in plan and is decorated on one face. The decoration consists of two 'trumpet' crescentic shapes which are back to back with the void at the upper edge. The border of this face is raised and varies in width. Protruding from the convex edge is a rectangular sectioned copper alloy casing filled with iron. This copper alloy casing appears to be incomplete as the edge is irregular, and the iron has corroded so that it covers the edge from further examination. The convex edge of the item has an elongated sub-triangular void either side of the …

A linch pin foot terminal dating to the 1st century BC to 1st century AD. The flat, circular surface has been damaged and one edge is straight and the dark green patina covers this edge. The opposite edge has waved slightly. The design on this circular surface is very worn, only a 'S' shape is visible off-centre. Otherwise this surface has iron corrosion over it. The 'circular' surface is cast as part of an inverted sub-conical shape, and the 'circular' surface is placed at the tip and then tilted so it is vertical. Where the circular surface has a straight edge through damaged, the …

A 1st century BC/AD copper-alloy linch pin terminal. It has a circular face with a high relief design. The design consists of crescent and pellets. The edges of the face are curved. On the reverse there is an incomplete high relief circular ring in the centre with a circular indentation. The surface of the reverse is rough and suggests broken edges.

The upper face is sub-rectangular and incomplete. The remaining portion of the original edge is curved suggesting originally this face was circular. The face has become sub-rectangular by the item having two parallel breaks either side of the central stem on which this face sits. The face was broken in antiquity as the patina on the break is the same as elsewhere on the item. The decoration of the face is a geometric circular pattern with cells forming the design. Within five or the six visible cells there are the remains of red enamel. The original edge of the face has a turned down l…
