Iron Age to Roman (-100 to 200) cosmetic mortar: The copper alloy mortar is crescentic in profile and an elongated pointed oval in plan. Iron Age to Roman (-100 to 200) cosmetic mortar: The copper alloy mortar is fragmentary with only a terminal remaining. In profile the mortar is semi-crescentic and is an elongated triangle in plan. The original terminal has a slightly bulbous knops, and the other terminal is broken, but this is not a recent break as the surface is the same as the side faces. In section the mortar has a 'V' shaped section which is narrow and quite shallow. The side faces are undecorated. The surface of the mortar has traces of a dark grey patina which is pitted and heavily abraded. It measures 31.6mm …

A cast copper-alloy centre-looped cosmetic mortar dating to the 1st to 2nd century AD. The cosmetic mortar is crescentic in profile with knobbed terminals. These terminals are circular in section and decorated with a fine groove around the circumference. In section the mortar is a 'V' shape with a wide curved interior surface. The apex of the exterior is further decorated with an integral 'W' shaped lug which has two circular perforations. The 'corners' of the 'W' are abraded and are possibly actually broken edges. A cast copper alloy cosmetic mortar. The cosmetic mortar is a crescentic in profile with blunt worn points. In section the mortar is a ‘V’ shape with a wide curved interior or upper surface. This concave portion on the upper surface is very shallow. The surface of the mortar has an incomplete dark green coloured patina. It measures 33.16mm long, 9.24mm wide across the loop and 7.49mm thick. It weighs 5.7g. Originally the mortar would have had a loop at one terminal. A cast copper alloy cosmetic mortar. The cosmetic mortar is an elongated crescent in profile with an integral loop beneath one terminal. The loop is circular with a slightly oval hole. The body of the mortar is ‘V’ shaped in section, which tapers in width and depth towards each terminal becoming shallower. The base of the mortar is slightly rounded. Within the groove of the mortar there is an orange deposit, this deposit is also found in the crease of the loop and the mortar body and therefore may not be related to the substances which would have been ground within the mortar. The …

The object is possibly a Roman cosmetic mortar, made of copper alloy. It is a elongated sub-crescentic shape in profile. Both terminals are broken, but not recently. The upper surface of the mortar is concave. The surface of this face has its patina missing, and there are only patches of a heavy brown patina on the exterior. Usually with cosmetic mortars there are traces of a well developed patina on the concave surface, which may have been further developed by wear, but there are known of these indications on the recorded object. Another possibility is the object is a type of ed…
