A cast copper alloy handle fragment from a late Iron Age or Roman tankard, executed in a Celtic style. In plan the handle is pointed oval, in profile it is convex and in cross-section it is a wide 'V'. Both pointed ends are incomplete. The main body of the handle is concave, sloping to a deep groove down the centre. The surface may have been decorated but it is now too worn and corroded to be certain.
These type of handles were seen from Iron Age through to the Roman period. This handle is most likely to be Roman, similar examples can be seen in Macgregors book (1976; Vol 2; nos290 …

25 sherds of pottery, probably Iron Age in date. All sherds are body sherds apart from one base and one rim sherd. The base sherd appears to have been from a large storage vessel, whilst the rim is reasonably thin and everted, being probably from a globular beaker or jug. The sherds are thick and the fabric is a dark brown/black colour. The outer surface is a light brown colour. Most sherds are grit tempered, whilst a few are shell tempered.

Incomplete copper alloy vessel spout. The spout is zoomorphic and in the form of an Ox head. The head is smooth, undecorated and slightly pitted. From the forehead sweep two circular sectioned horns, one complete and the other incomplete. The complete horn curves upwards and forwards into a semi-circle, slightly tapering until it meets a bulbous terminal. This bulbous feature may be representing a horn cap, thus indicating their use on the horns of live animals. The other horn begins as the complete one does, however a short way along it suffered some damage in antiquity and now …

Cast copper alloy mount in the form of the foreparts of a boar. The mount has been cast with forelegs thrust well forward, a projecting hind part and a corroded hole through the nose. The feet are cloved. The reverse of the body of the mount is concave.
A number of parallels have been found. Examples from Aldborough, Eastcheap and London are published by Foster (1977, p21), and are described as probable vessel mounts of provincial rather than Roman style and date. Exact dating and use is, however, uncertain.

Copper alloy fragment, possibly the socketed shaft from a miniature spear. The object is a rolled over sheet of copper alloy that widens towards a flattned terminal that appears to open into something. Both ends are incomplete.
The find was made in an area that has produced numerous Iron Age and Roman miniature shields, swords and spears. The object may not be this date however, and equally may be a medieval lace chape.
