A late Iron Age copper alloy unit, North-East Coast inscribed type - 'AVN C OST'. Copper-alloy units are traditionally thought to be a contemporary copies of gold staters. The motifs and inscription on this coin are extremely well executed and either suggest that the forger was highly skilled or was using the same dies as the gold staters. The coin is slightly concave and has a shiney reddish patina, which may be the remains of gilding.
Cf. Hobbs, plate 105, no. 3258.
This coin is recorded on the Celtic Coin Index as CCI 10.0870.
